Meet Sonja Marie of Wordlife Astrology in Westchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Marie.

Sonja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At a young age, I knew I had to BE and DO something extraordinary. I didn’t know what that looked like growing up in the grit of Yonkers, NY. I began seeing Spirits and knowing details about my mom’s friends, intuitively. It wasn’t received well as you’re always supposed to stay in a “Child’s place”, so….I shut that part of my gift down with partying and being a typical, rebellious teenager. My liberal mother introduced me to “Star Scrolls”. An astrology vending machine made popular in the 70’s and 80’s. I became incredibly enthralled with the power it held to change my emotions and keep me positive about my life. Fast forward to marrying into a family that embraced Western Astrology. I adopted a mother in law (my ex-husband and I have since divorced) that became an incredible mentor of mine; I affectionately call her Mama Nit. She taught me the art of “intuitive learning”.

Sensing what’s around you and applying the knowledge of astrology to what you feel is right within. Coupled with a resurgence of my intuitive and/or mediumship I’ve abandoned years ago, I began to conduct spiritual/astrology readings. This gift and has led me to appearing on The Steve Harvey Show, The Doctors and the Astrology columnist for ESSENCE MAGAZINE for the last six years. I’m currently writing my first Astrology/memoir book and looking to secure my own television series. Life is good. And I absolutely LOVE assisting people to heal through their journey. Oh, I’m also a dope poet and performer featured on the infamous “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack with a little diddy, “And I Gave My Love To You”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road is smooth! Life teaches you through the challenges and you’re able to show yourself and your Creator what you’re capable of withstanding. Astrology and Spiritual practices haven’t always been popular. So one of the main struggles was navigating how to make a living out of what I innately know how to do. The second struggle, which is a bit more personal, comes from people’s opinions and rejections of your gift. This society shuns the “unseen”. It’s hard to realize that the power we need to thrive is already within and they’d rather obtain their from the outside via organized church, spouses, career choices, etc. There’s nothing wrong with those sources but Astrology and Spiritual finds – they way I teach and share – empowers the person to love themselves fully, so we can love each other better.
