Today we’d like to introduce you to Carianne Older.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi, I’m Carianne, also known as Peggy. Im originally from South Florida, but I spent a great deal of time in NYC before making the big old move across the world to LA.I’ve always taken photos, mainly because I like being in front of the camera. I’ve always had random cameras growing up, but I started taking it seriously about 2 years ago when I got into film. I started shooting for fun, my boss at my 9-5 gave me a large Christmas bonus, and with that I turned around and bought an expensive film camera. I didn’t really take photography seriously until people were asking me for my rates. I had a full time job, photography was just for fun, a way to get my creative energy out. Yet, people really dug what I was doing, enough so that they offered to pay me, so all of a sudden it started to get a bit more serious than just doing it for fun.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not! I wish I could say it was. Being a FEMALE in any industry is hard. More jobs go to men…always..its a weird fact. Being one of the only female film photographers out there has been amazing for my career. I got into it before the fad of “film” came back. A guy almost fainted last week when he saw be buying 35mm film at CVS. He was so in shock, it was funny.
Pursuing my passion has been tough, honestly. My work background is corporate, which definitely does help with running my own photography business. Yet, somedays I miss working 9-5 and having a schedule. I definitely do not miss sitting at a desk for hours on end! Getting to create for a living is a beautiful thing, i’m very grateful.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I actually decided a few weeks ago to take photography more seriously and now im the CEO (also my initials) of my own business! Im not only a female film photographer, but im also a content creator, creative director, and visionary. I’m a team of 1…I dont enjoy working with others on set, I feel it gets in the way of me and my subject, therefore I try to be a 1 woman team. It’s worked out for me thus far! Being a young female working and growing my own business is crazy. In the past year I’ve shot for brands I’ve always dreamed of working with, such as Polaroid, Kinky Beverages, Kandy Pens, and Vitae Swimwear as well as having editorial work in Milk and Galore magazine.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Ooooh excellent question. I’d say I have good luck, good karma. Call it cliche, I believe in stuff like that. Thinking positively and manifesting your destiny is the key to success. Many of my friends would agree, I’ve turned many of them on to the ways in which manifestation plays such a large part in our day to day lives.
