Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Ruiz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Olivia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been running since I was a little girl. Everything was a competition and I always wanted to find someone to race. I took my love for running and joined track and cross country, which I did in middle school all the way into High school. I still currently compete in both sports at my college. When I was in high school, my love for running disappeared. I started to doubt myself and ask if this was really what I wanted to continue doing. I remember I would come home crying from races because I felt like I didn’t make my parents, coaches, and teammates proud. My parents and coaches have always, and will always support me no matter what, but at this time I felt like I let them down. One of my coaches then called me the morning of Christmas Eve, telling me that I should give running another try. That I had already put it so much work through the years, that senior year wasn’t the time to quit. Once break was over, I gained my motivation back and slowly started to regain my love for the sport.
On that note, I started YouTube over the summer and since I always enjoyed making up movie ideas and filming different things when I was younger, “I thought why not do the same with YouTube?” I started my channel basing it off of my two passions, running and fashion. Of course, I also incorporate other things I enjoy as well, like cooking and vlogs along the way. I started YouTube in order to help other people. When people have questions or are just curious about a certain thing, they go to the internet. I wanted to be able to help them with any questions or curiosities they might have. At the end of each of my videos, I like to end with an inspirational quote. Hoping to inspire someone who needs words of wisdom, or just to brighten up someone’s day. YouTube is my creative outlet because at the end of a long day, I can come home and edit or film new things or new ideas. I am so grateful for all the people and opportunities I have gained along the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like I stated in the last question, I wanted to quit running because of one bad race. I learned that one race doesn’t define who you are. One mistake doesn’t define who you are. You just have to never give up and if you still enjoy it, keep moving forward. Another obstacle I faced was with YouTube. With a month of starting my channel, I had already faced negative comments and accounts making fun of the topics or things I did. I just learned to take the negative things in my life and use them to fuel me into moving forward.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a YouTuber who focuses on running and fashion. I also add a few cooking videos and vlogs along the way, just to show the viewers a little bit of inside on my life. The motto I like to use and love by is “Spread Kindness”, since being kind is the best way people can treat each other.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The good thing about running and YouTube is you can do it almost anywhere. I say if you have been thinking about starting a channel for some time now, just do it. You don’t want to regret it in the end and wish you had started one sooner.
