Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayo Cortez.
Jayo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started writing my first rhymes at around five years old. I always was fascinated by music since I was a baby. My mother said I would just sit in front of the TV and just watch music videos all day as a toddler. I think my love and passion for music comes from my parents. My mom and dad would always play music for me, especially music from the 90s. When I got older I played the bass drum in my elementary school band. The conductor said I had the best sense of rhythm he had ever scene.
I played basketball for three years in high school but sat out my senior year because I wanted to pursue my career as an artist. I recorded my first song at 17 years old. When I listened to the song and heard my voice, I knew immediately this is what I was supposed to be doing. As I got older, I began to progress as an artist. Not only do I write all my raps, but I also produce all of my beats as well. My latest project I dropped is titled “22:6” and it is available for streaming everywhere.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been very challenging. My team and I have faced many problems along the road. But we know it’s all part of the process. We understand that if we want to make it in this business, we have to be able to endure those challenges and overcome all of the obstacles. One of the biggest problems we used to have was finding producers to work with. That ultimately led to me making my own beats and I feel like that was one of the best decisions I could’ve made. It allowed me to take complete control of my sound as an artist.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I started G.I.A.N.T.S Records in 2015. It’s an acronym standing for “God Is Always Needed To Succeed”. Right now we’re still in our beginning stages but we’re eventually trying to grow into a successful independent record label. And eventually, branch out into the multi media entertainment business. We’re growing as a business and constantly progressing and making strides. Right now I’m the only artist but as we continue to grow, we’re going to become involved with other artists.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories is just hanging out with my friends. In the summertime of 2011, we were literally hanging out every day. Going to the pike, the beach, and the movies almost every day. That will forever be my favorite summer.
