Today we’d like to introduce you to Dontrell Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dontrell. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I gain interest in acting when I was in the 7th grade. I knew deep inside it was something that I was good at. I did not get serious acting until my 8th grade year. This was back in 2006, I had my very first audition for a talent agency. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a scam. As I think back at that time it made me more aware and inspired me to gain more education about this business.
When I finally entered high school my freshmen year, I join the drama club at Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Georgia. My very first acting coach was Sharrell Luckett, who is now the lead Instructor at “Black Acting Methods Studio”! While in the drama club I was apart of countless productions. Outside of school, I was apart of EYE “Empowered Youth Entertainment! My peers and I at that time would go around the metro Atlanta area and perform for kids in grade school.
Throughout my time in school I knew I wanted to pursue acting professionally. I started researching acting gigs online. I also searched for different acting class, photographers, and agents. Eventually, I started taking classes and got some professional acting headed shots. With my perseverance and hard work I landed myself an agent. This started my career professionally.
I started the real world of acting. I was auditioning for different television and movie projects. I’ve booked and few feature films, some tv shows and numerous short films. I did all of this while still in high school.
After graduating, I went to college at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. There I gain some more training experience with my craft and I also starred in plenty of productions. My focus wasn’t on school as much as it was on acting, so I decided to leave and pursue my career 100 Percent.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This Journey has not been easy! There is a lot of rejection in this business and things don’t always go as planned. However, I always think about the bigger picture. This is something that I am meant to do and I want to have longevity. With longevity comes with a slow grind and a lot of hard work. There has been a lot of sleepless nights, lack of support “mentally and financially”, and no audition lol! However: I always make it through and things always work out in my favor!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am multi-talented! What a lot of people don’t know about me is that besides acting; I also write, dance, sing and rap. I am also a hell of a casting director and creative genius! I was 14 years old when I started acting and now I am 27 years old with years of experience.
Career-wise, I am mostly known for a few shows I did on TV One and ID channel! Every once in a while people would connect the dots and say that they saw me on some of the feature films I’ve done in the past.
In my personal life I’m known for having a really good time and I love being around my family and friends. Traveling the world is also something I like to do. Swimming is something I love to do all the time. Those who really know me personally know me for smelling really good lol! I love nice fragrances and nice smells!
I am most proud of my courage to move to Los Angeles, California from Georgia by myself! That process is something that is so special to me. Prior to moving out to LA, I had a strategic plan to make sure my move was as smooth as possible. By the Grace of God and a lot of faith everything worked out! I knew that I wanted to have my car, my job, and a place to live before coming.
I worked at Home Depot at the time and I had ask my supervisor for transfer. My mother and my aunt helped to get my car transported across the country. I worked a deal out to stay in an Air BnB for three weeks until my apartment was ready! Thanks to Pheedie…….. All 3 of those things I got accomplished!
God really showed me so much favor and open so many doors for me!
I’ve been living in LA going to 2 years now and so many great things have happened. While living here, I secured great representation and awesome management! I got a better job with Delta Airlines which is perfect for and actor to travel for auditions across the country. I also reconnected with some old friends from Georgia and gain many connections with prestigious industry professionals.
What sets me apart from others is my personal life story being me Dontrell Blair Jones! My insane work ethic and my ability to be able to overcome trials and tribulations with a smile on my face and Joy in my heart! I always look for was to grown and get better, I know that I can Never Give Up!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
This question is so appropriate for this moment in time in my life. Recently on August 26, 2019 my Aunt Robin passed away! She meant so much to me and if it wasn’t for her I would not be here doing this interview. She saved my life literally!
With that being said, my favorite memory is me going to Syracuse, New York every summer to be with my family! I grew up in Riverdale, Georgia so I didn’t have the opportunity to see them through the year. Going to Syracuse I would be there the entire summer and everyone would always gather at Aunt Robin’s house. It was a great time being among family! A lot of laughter, love, fights, and food! That’s something I would cherish for the rest of my life!
Rest In Peace
Robin Green
