Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Hoogenboom.
Brandon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well its been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I will give you the brief version. When I was 19, I moved to Australia, and a one year study turned into a five years stay, so most of my musical career has been in Australia fronting my band called Set Sail. We had a hell of a run starting out busking on the streets for change, to selling out some of my favorite venues in Sydney and Melbourne, touring the world, and playing some really fun festivals, as well as getting deported but that’s a whole other story. I moved back home to California in late 2014 to be closer to my family and focus more on my solo music and art. Today I’m a little more in the shadows but have never felt so connected to my music and I put out my first full-length album early this year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is the road ever smooth? We had some typical drama in Set Sail and when I came back to the states I went into a deep depression, something I had never felt before. It took me a while to navigate that. Loosing the camaraderie of bandmates and the fast pace lifestyle, I felt like I had nothing to show at home. Luckily I had my family and friends to fall back on. And not I had some sad stories to writes some songs about haha.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I just released my first Album earlier this year. Most of my music leans towards having a happy summer feel, no matter what the subject of the song is. I think it might be a curse but I’m ok with that.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Working hard every day and teaming up with the right people.
