Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanity Lynn.
Vanity, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a little girl, I looked up to my stepfather as a father figure. He was very encouraging of my artistic abilities at a young age. Him being an avid tattoo partitioner had highly recommended me to become a tattoo artist. He promised to buy me a tattoo machine for my 13th birthday. Sadly he passed away in a fire when I was 12. I continued practicing fine arts in those islands. I won awards in calligraphic design and studied sculpting and drawing. As a young adult, I did a lot of different jobs. From jet skis and parasailing to bartending and waitressing. After realizing my life was so unsatisfying, and it had been years since I had done any art, I decided to become a tattoo apprentice. I went to every shop I could walk to with my drawing portfolio and was turned down over and over. Finally, I begged for it. The owner didn’t want to hire me, but she did anyways. I worked so hard for years. Trying to scrape money together and find my place. Friends and family didn’t support my passion. They said oh it’s been four years and you haven’t gotten anywhere just give up. Tattoo shops are no place for women. I couldn’t give up. I couldn’t put that much time into this life and just give it away. Finally, now, after eight years, I work by appointment. I book almost everything via Instagram or word of mouth. I am my own business, my art, my passion, my clients, my son. Everything has been worth all the years of tears and struggle.
Has it been a smooth road?
The struggles were no one believing in me. Putting me down. Building clientele over the years was very hard financially. Having my son and taking time off work. I almost died during my labor and had a very prolonged healing process. Taking time off work when you’re just starting to come up can be detrimental for business. Feeling alone often because I eat, slept, and breathed my job for years. Some times I wouldn’t have a day off for 40 days straight because it became an obsession. I had a lot of people I worked with target me and try to hurt me maliciously like break my things or steal my stuff. Start arguments and try to cause drama out of jealousy. It has not been easy one bit. But I strive to keep doing what I love. For me, my son and my clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vanity Tattoos – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a professional tattoo artist based out of Deerfield Beach, Florida. I specialize in watercolor/color tattoos. I am also a certified piercer but do not practice. I am most proud of myself to be a business entity of my own. My hands are my tools, and they can take me anywhere in the world. What sets me apart from others is I do not limit myself to specialty styles. I am willing to do any type of tattooing style with my own flare. I love diversity and giving people the artwork they want. When it comes to my work, it’s not all about me. My client comes first.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I like versatile customers. Pretty inks. Music. Candles. I dislike customers who don’t want to work with me on designs or think their time is more valuable than mine. I also don’t like customers who don’t value my artwork and think it’s too expensive and their friend can do it cheaper at home. Unfortunately, we live in a world that still idolizes cheap shitty work.
