Art & Life with Alex Andros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Andros.

Alex, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a proud Greek-American! My parents immigrated to the United States from Greece and I was born in New Hampshire and then raised in a small town in Vermont before heading to Boston for college. From a young age I would always find myself bunched up on the couch watching old classic movies, including Greek ones, and letting myself get lost in the story which would sometimes include me talking to the TV! I remember I would always get emotionally invested in the characters and storylines and would often have a bunch of questions afterwards which I would naturally think my mom had the answers to. I am sure I put her on the spot more than once.

Later on in my teens, I had the opportunity to direct, produce and star in my own project. That was my first taste of entertainment and all the components that go into making a film. I loved the process but didn’t think I could ever do anything with it. In high school I was asked to have a small part in a theater production which I did not knowing how much I would enjoy the process. Post high school, I attended college in Boston where I received a business degree and a week after graduating I signed up for my first official acting class and the rest is history!

A couple years later I moved Los Angeles and have been here ever since. I have studied at several places here including Howard Fine Acting Studio, Margie Haber Studio and The Groundlings Theatre & School. I continue to grow both as an individual and an artist daily!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an actor, do some modeling and will soon be venturing into producing as well. I guess you can say I am a little bit of a cliché but it’s alright in LA aren’t we all? Let’s just say I strive to be a jack of all trades!

As an actor I enjoy living the life of the character and bringing the words off the page to life. It’s always fun to create a backstory and pull from my own experiences and then further develop the character’s backstory with my imagination. If you think about it as men we are often told to push our feelings down and made to think sensitivity is a sign of weakness but in acting you have to dig deep and learn to bring those feelings up to the surface and then live in them. It can be brutal and magical all at the same time. Honestly, it is all a learning process!

I want people watching my work to be entertained. I hope they have some sort of emotional connection, whether it is them sympathizing with the character, or even disliking the character, some sort of response is better than none. Letting themselves go along for the ride and being present for all the twists and turns in the storyline is key.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Try to do at least one thing related to your art daily. Also, have a game plan. For example, I knew I wanted to move to Los Angeles so I made sure to save as much money as possible and pay off any debt that I had prior to coming here. There are mornings where I wake up and question what I am doing but then I take a deep breath and say to myself I am enough. The truth is you have to hustle a lot, have some luck, stay positive, and surround yourself with likeminded people. There are plenty of days where I am exhausted from working a day job but I still make sure to complete at least one activity related to my art but what do I know I still have a ways to go!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
The best way to stay in the loop and support me is through my social media. I have a couple of things in the works including a feature length documentary, which focuses on the very complicated tax evasion situation in Greece, where I will be working behind the scenes in production. I am also in the beginning stages of developing a short film with some friends where I will be a part of the writing and producing team, as well as acting in it. I have also booked several commercials that were for foreign markets so if you are abroad keep an eye out for me!

Someone recently asked me what I have been up to relating to acting and entertainment and gave me a valuable piece of advice; “sometimes you just have to throw stuff up against the wall and see what sticks,” and that is exactly what I am doing! I was always a curious kid and I guess I haven’t lost that quality because I want to continue to learn as much as possible about acting and film making.
