Meet Dr. Zoe Shaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Zoe Shaw.

Dr. Shaw, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in rural Maryland, among very little diversity. My self-esteem took a few hits as I was trying to find my place in the world. I found myself pregnant at 15 and chose to place my daughter for adoption, which led to a whole host of issues as I launched into my adulthood.

After high school, I traveled to Hollywood and met a movie actor 23 years my senior. We quickly got married and I embarked on a new journey of a dysfunctional marriage, four beautiful children, one who has special needs, and a Hollywood life.

Along my sometimes very difficult journey, there were many times that I had to choose to give up or grow. As I found my own strength as a woman, I knew I had to help other women on difficult journeys.

I earned my master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and a doctorate in clinical psychology. I practiced traditionally for 15 years before jumping off the couch to help women in a non- traditional way through my podcast, writing, speaking and advice column.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing worth having is easily gained. My personal road and entrepreneurial journey has not been smooth.

I put in years of self-development to get to a point where I could help other women.

Jumping off the couch and leaving the beaten path of traditional therapy was a risk. I had to develop writing skills, find video platforms to host my client sessions, learn social media and marketing and find speaking gigs and opportunities to write.

I am continuing to stretch myself by writing my memoir.

Reading the book, Rejection Proof was a life changer for me. I learned that as an entrepreneur, I had to risk rejecti0n and ask for what I wanted. The biggest wins in my business have come from being willing to ask.

I have also had failures along the way and made investments that didn’t pan out. I see every failed venture as a lesson that has propelled me to my ultimate success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dr. Zoe Shaw Enterprises story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a licensed psychotherapist, life coach, writer, podcast host, advice columnist, and motivational speaker.

I love working with women in all phases of their lives to get unstuck, develop their talents and find a strength that they didn’t even know existed.

I work predominantly through video sessions with clients throughout Los Angeles and the world.

I am most proud when I hear feedback from a podcast listener or someone who has heard me speak and says that I have changed their lives for the better.

I believe that all behavior makes sense in its context. I love hearing the context of my client’s lives so that together we can understand where they are and pave a path to a thriving life moving forward.

My name is Zoe, which means Life. My father named me appropriately because I embody that description. I have a contagious energy and a zest for life that my clients love and I am so thankful for.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I truly live by the saying, “Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.” I have been quite lucky in some of the opportunities that I have had in life and business, but I have worked crazy hard to make sure that I am prepared when an opportunity arises.
