Meet Jennifer Yang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Yang.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I feel like unlike most, I’m still on my way to where I really want to be, and that’s ok! I was born and raised in New Jersey until I went to college at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida. There I studied Computer Animation and completed college with a BFA. Almost immediately after graduating, I got a short term job up in Stanford, California, at a company that encourages young kids to learn programming and engineering. While working over the Summer at Stanford, I grew to love California and decided after I was finished with this job, I would move down to Los Angeles.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m still on the bumpy road. It’s tough feeling like your “last”, which is how I feel sometimes, but I know that I shouldn’t be comparing myself to others. I still have a goal of working in the industry I studied, and I know that I’ll get there someday. It may take me a little while longer than my friends and peers, but I’m welcoming the struggle. I try to work everyday whether it be on portfolio, or commissions I get online, applying to artist jobs, etc. Doing something that’ll help me get there one small step at a time.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in character design. Though my major was computer animation, I only learned too late that it was something I did not want to do all my life. I learned maybe too late that I just wanted to draw pretty pictures and make people happy. Thus far, I am most proud of how I’ve been able to handle just living. In college, I remember being terrified of not getting a job or internship right after graduating, but now that I’m living it, it’s not bad at all.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that I’ve been able to sustain myself so far, due to the fact that I can remain calm in almost any given situation. Which I think I’ve developed even more since I like to do a lot of new things and meet new people even though I am naturally very introverted.
