Today we’d like to introduce you to Gato.
Gato, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been fascinated with music ever since I can remember. I spent a lot of my childhood listening to a stereo. I would wake up in the mornings and blast mtv on the tv as I would get ready for school and I would come home from school and immediately start blasting music an old stereo system my dad had. If I wasn’t listening to rap music, I was listening to classic rock. I was hooked to everything music did to me. The feeling, the enjoyment!
My first recollection of actually wanting to make music was around the age of 10 when I received guitar hero as a birthday gift. I spent countless hours playing that game and pretending I was a rock star. I didn’t actually start making music until I was 12 when an older cousin introduced me to FL Studio. While I was figuring out how to work in fl studio, I started making reggaeton and slowly was introduced to edm thru a sub-genre called moombahton. I spent about three summers just making edm and learning everything I could about music production. I loved the whole edm scene but at a certain point, I really felt the need to make more impactful and personal music. Something I felt I couldn’t do thru edm. It was then that I began to experiment and create music under the name gato.
I began making music I wanted to hear, music with textures and meaning. I wanted to make music that you can listen to and go on a full adventure just by closing your eyes. It all came organically and I love that. I never forced anything and I think people really liked that about my music and myself. Throughout the past four years, I’ve built a catalog of music I love and have enjoyed making, while also building a career as an audio engineer, , and music producer. It’s been a long journey but a great one that landed me here in this beautiful city. I feel extremely blessed on a daily basis.
Has it been a smooth road?
Noooooooo, I don’t think anyone’s road is smooth. But one of the struggles I’ve had along the way was staying true to myself. Knowing where you come from and where you’re going is key. It’s easy to get carried away and compare your journey to others. It makes you doubt yourself and lose track of everything, You can’t be comparing yourself to others. You lose time and energy doing that. Focus on yourself and always progress forward no matter what. Consistency and passion for what you do will naturally grow you and get you to where you want to get.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I do music production, audio engineering, and songwriting. I specialize in the hip-hop genre but have had my hands in just about every genre of music which in my eyes sets me apart from anyone else. I’m most known for my specific production style and I take pride in the quality of my work.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of our city! So many passionate people here. The traffic definitely has to be my least favorite, I’ve said no to a couple of dates just because of traffic. That’s how much I hate it. Sorry, Carol.
