Meet Seraphina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seraphina.

Seraphina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a musician, singer and songwriter born and bred in London, but my dad is American and lived in LA while I was growing up, so I call it my second home. I released my debut EP in 2017 and since then have put out another three singles, while also working and recording with another band I’m in – the girlband TRILLS. My dad’s a musician, so it was kind of inevitable that I’d follow in his footsteps, however, it took me a few years to realize this is where my heart lies. I worked in festivals, music PR and events before throwing in the towel to pursue music full time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle was taking the leap and quitting my stable job to go back to college and study music, not knowing whether it would work out. But it was the best decision I’ve ever made – I’d rather try and fail than regret not trying at all. The other big struggle that I think most musicians will empathize with is self-doubt – it can take a lot of blind stubbornness to silence the bad thoughts and keep going, especially in the age of social media where you’re constantly seeing other people’s progress.

Please tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I make alternative pop music under my own name and harmony-saturated folk-pop with my girlband TRILLS. With TRILLS we’re signed to a sync agency based in LA so have had our songs featured in quite a few film trailers and TV shows which we’re really proud of – we’re friends from school and have been together for ten years making music as a hobby for a long time before it became ‘professional’, so it’s been amazing to watch it evolve and grow. We also recently did backing vocals for Swedish pop artist Robyn at this beautiful, huge venue in London called Alexandra Palace which was INSANE.

What sets me apart… my heritage I guess. I’m Greek, Black, and Cherokee, but born and bred in London; my mum’s family are from a tiny Greek island and my dads are big in the Church down in Florida, so I’ve had all these disparate musical influences growing up: church gospel, swamp blues, British indie, alt-rock & folk, traditional music played in Greek tavernas and the shit eurodisco from the clubs….such a weird mix!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m working on new music at the moment that leans more towards new wave / dark synth stuff (basically anything that could slot into the Twin Peaks soundtrack is the vibe I’m going for…) and will be releasing that soon so watch this space…
