Art & Life with Demese Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demese Black.

Demese, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I never wanted to be famous; I just wanted to be known as a really good photographer. My dad brought me my first camera when I was in the 5th grade. I was fascinated because first, it was a mickey mouse camera and second, the right ear was used to take the picture. I played around with that camera and made fun memories. I became really serious during my freshman year in High school. I got my real first camera which was a Nikon. I would bring my camera to school every day and take many candid shots for the school yearbook. I loved taking pictures, but I hated manually developing the film. College came really quickly, and I stepped up my game and joined a photography class at Cal State Northridge. I began to grow as a photographer, but I had yet to find what I was really passionate about shooting. I photographed the track team, basketball team and football team and I this big notion that I would be a photographer for the Los Angeles Lakers. My dream came to a crashing halt when someone broke into my car and stole all of my camera equipment. My spirit was broken, and I stopped doing photography for years. In 2002 I met a man named David Perry. He inspired me to start over and reignite my passion. His story inspired me because he went from being in the military to being on skid row for three years and on to owning his own nationwide full-service photography and video company. I went on to do many shoots around LA. I was able to shoot the Los Angles Lakers last championship ceremony at the Coliseum. Suddenly, basketball players wives were asking me to take family pictures. In 2013, I went to Florence, Italy with my new mentor Christa Meola. She taught me how to shoot boudoir photography that was so different from anything I have ever seen. I now know how to shoot Boudoir in a classy form. Having the gift to pull that sexiness out of any woman is something that I now have. I finally found my passion! Boudoir is whatever you what it to be. Although I shoot family portraits, headshot, lifestyle and interior design photos, I specialize in Boudoir photography. I have two photography companies, Demese Black Photography, and D Black Label Boudoir Photography. I am so proud of the work that I have created and the work that I am continuing to create. I work in both LA and Houston, TX.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a woman doing photography for women and men too-I do not discriminate- everyone can have a day of gorgeousness. I am a lifestyle and Boudoir photographer. Your wish is my command. I do not want to be put in a box or a backdrop if I can help it. I love using the limitless beauty natural light to capture the essence and beauty of every woman. I enjoy bringing out that edgy sexiness of a man. Sexy is sexy is sexy. You are sexy, and I want you to feel sexy (and COMFORTABLE): on a bed, on a balcony, in a bathtub… Sexy isn’t just one thing. It is so many things and is open to creative and artistic interpretation. And it most certainly isn’t anyone body-type or shape or size: everyone can feel beautiful through my lens, and I will take good care of you! I create classic and timelines pieces of art. I want women to know that they can trust me to create something beautiful and natural for themselves to treasure forever. Also, I want men to look at there photos and stick that chest out and feel good about how they look in there photos.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My advice to the artist is to DO YOU! Do good great work and treat your clients like royalty. That is the best advertisement you could get for free. When you are a client and are treated very well, they will tell their friends.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have two websites:

Demeseblack.com

Dblacklabelboudoir.com

Potential clients can support my work by reaching out to me when they are serious about doing a lifestyle shoot or a boudoir shoot.
