Check out Alexa Silvaggio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Silvaggio.

Alexa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When I look back, I realize there wasn’t one moment in particular that defined me or moved me in a certain way. It was more of a continuum of moments strung together that set me on this path. The path where we meet. I was born into a family of dancers. Both my mother and my aunt owned (and still own) wildly successful dance schools in California. At the age of 3, my journey began. Before the age of 14, I had toured China, Russia, Spain, Cuba, and all over the United States as a dancer. At 15 I attended Interlochen Arts Academy in the upper peninsula of Michigan, studying musical theatre. From there, my summers were at NYU, and from there I attended Syracuse University to study Musical Theatre as well.

My sophomore year, I booked my first professional show, and the shows kept coming and coming which was AMAZING, except for one small problem.

I was severely Anorexic. I had associated my worth and my capabilities with what my body looked like, what it could do, how emaciated it was. I worked a lot as a sick person, which hopefully says more about the industry than it does about me.

As I started to heal my perspective on life changed. What’s was important changed. My values changed. And I decided to leave that life behind, taking the lessons with me. I became a writer, yoga teacher, and entrepreneur, creating my own organic chocolate company that is to launch this year. Not only did this shift enable my creativity in a more authentic way, but it saved my life.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
In my writing, my speaking, my teaching, and yes even with my organic/paleo/vegan chocolate brand I encourage people to cultivate a more loving relationship to their body and themselves. We live in a culture that prospers and proliferates off of us feeling less than. Feeling flawed and unworthy. That dialogue has to shift pronto if we are going to have a meaningful human experience.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
If it was created, it’s a success. We have so many obstacles, critics, our own minds, our fear… there are so many reasons not to create that if something gets conjured… wow. That’s badassery.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My first book is still in its process, so that’s exciting and happening. I teach for Equinox West Hollywood and Hollywood, Unplug Meditation Weho and for a studio called Yoga Vibe Weho as well. I lead international retreats all over the world, and my next one is June 15-22 in Bali www.thetravelyogi.com/teachers/AlexaSilvaggio.

Most of us, myself included at times
Have forgotten how to eat with awareness, compassion, and respect. Which is why I created Savage Chocolates. (Silvaggio means Savage in Italian) to learn more go to www.savagelosangeles.com.
