Today we’d like to introduce you to Dane Nicks.
Dane, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a 28-year-old Nashville native. After going through both difficult and beautiful moments in my life, I found my love for wire wrapping jewelry, tiaras, lamps, and many more things! If I can see it, I can wrap it.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
In October 2016 I found my niche for wire wrapping from a friend I attended various festivals with. He once purchased a wire wrapped pendant from one of the festivals, and it sparked my creative curiosity. However, I didn’t act upon the curiosity until five years later when I spotted a woman making something and noticed it was a wire wrap. I approached her to see how it was done, and a week later she decided to teach me the craft. After that moment I knew this was meant for me.
A series of unfortunate events occurred soon after leading up to becoming homeless and having difficult family matters. However with a young son, Dane Nicks JR., I knew there was no stopping, even with the current situation. I soon began working with a union doing stagehand work and continued to wire wrap as much as I could in between; this way I would be able to get back on my feet and take care of what mattered.
During this time I was able to sell my first pendant to a local store. Eventually where ever I would wander to while wire wrapping people would take notice and started to purchase my jewelry and even began supporting me.
After being homeless for a year all of those people I encountered every day helped me finally bounce back, get a home and be able to make my wire wrapping no longer a dream, but a career I’ve been able to support myself and family with. Although it hurt taking time away from my family, I believed in my art and knew it would take me down the right path.
Within no time after I had my wire wrapped jewelry in 6 local stores.
Through wire wrapping, I’ve learned how to love myself and appreciate all the little things in life that are important. Those things should always be cherished, every day. I feel blessed to have been able to find my craft and know that one day in the far future there will always be small pieces of me in the world.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
There are many talented artists in the world making it difficult for viewers to filter through all the great ones. You have to find something you truly love to do, and within that, your work will be able to shine higher than the rest.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be viewed, purchased or supported through my Instagram @opusvibrations, Etsy shop www.etsy.shop/opusvibrationsco and through these following local stores: TwooldhippIes, Scarlet begonia, Art and invention.
