Meet Lucas Villemur of Single Shop in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Villemur.

Lucas, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1995. My mother is a professional actress and singer, featuring in movies and theater plays, and my dad he’s in charge of the financial part of a big company of schools and universities. I feel like I got the best of both worlds as I grew up, being my mom so spiritual and creative working with a lot of artists, and my dad more rational and down to earth working for a big company. They have taught me so much from two very different perspectives which made me who I am, a nerdy artist, music composer, and producer.

At the age of ten, I started taking piano and guitar lessons, and over the years I started to get into bass guitar, drums, and cello. Back in high school, when I was 13, I started to record and produce my own songs on my mom’s home studio, getting better over the years, starting my own bands and playing live in small and big venues in town.

At the age of 16, I found myself re-watching all Star Wars movies for the 23rd time (probably), but this time just paying attention to its music and how beautiful and well composed it was. And there I realized that music was my thing.

After finishing high school, I studied film scoring and music production in Buenos Aires, and then followed my dreams, moved to LA and studied Recording Arts at the Los Angeles Film School. There I met two of my best friends with which I lived and collaborated on so many projects. And with one of them I started our own band called “Single Shop,” and we write and produce our own music, having different featured artist singing and participating in every song.

Last year, I had to come back to Buenos Aires because of my visa’s deadline. But I also got the opportunity to found a music production company called “MELT” where I’m currently working and producing for big names and artist here in Argentina, getting good credits and working on getting everything done for my artist visa.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth, at first when you’re in high school or studying what you love in the university everything is amazing, but as you grow up, like most artist you start to realize that working in this industry it’s not easy at all, the rules are always changing, and you have to keep up and adapting, figuring out different ways to make a living out of your work and passion. And not only you have to be into your art and the creative side of it, but also on the legal side, so nobody takes advantage of you with an unbeneficial contract or a really bad deal. It’s really important to stand by your rights and get what you really deserve for your hard work.

Also, being an immigrant in the US, it’s not easy at all. Studying and living there it’s really expensive for us, and not only you get to focus on your classes and projects, but also you find the necessity to get into a lot of legal issues, keep track of all your deadlines which ends up consuming a lot of your time and money, when all you want to do is make music and work a lot, at least in my case.

But all these obstacles which might be seen as bad and a bummer, are actually essential to ourselves. They help us to grow up and open up our minds, stay in focus to our goals, and most importantly they teach us that determination and perseverance are the keys to success.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Single Shop – what should we know?
I’m a music composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

My main work consists on working with different artist, writing music with them and recording the songs, produce them and bring them to an industry standard level, according to the style and genre that every different artist pursues.

I have studied classical music, jazz, funk, pop, EDM and many other styles, which makes me a versatile musician when it comes to either creating a heavy electronic track or writing a string arrangement for a song. Also, the fact that I know how to play piano, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, and cello really helps me to quickly unload ideas that comes to my mind whenever the inspiration hits me.

On the other hand, I get to write music for different kinds of visuals, like commercials, tv shows, and short films, which I love doing because it allows me to write orchestral music, that you don’t usually find in popular music.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I can think a few different people that truly helped me to be who I am, and get where I am as well.

I had a couple of music teachers back in the university that have truly inspired me on appreciating music in ways I have never thought of, and one of them has become a close partner with which I ended up working within so many projects.

Jay Cruz with which I founded Single Shop, he was my roommate, and we’ve been through a lot. Working with him I found my passion for modern and pop music, that has become a big part of my work.

And Leandro Rivadulla with which I founded MELT, and together we’re working a lot and accomplishing things I have never ever thought of.
