Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickey Myers.
Mickey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A while back, I had a friend of a friend that owned a tattoo and piercing shop. Having spent the majority of my professional life in the medical field, diving into and loving the world of body piercing wasn’t a path I expected to follow. Though, when an offer came around, it felt like the right time to make a big change. On a bit of a destined whim, I committed to spending a year at that shop apprenticing and learning everything I could about this unique practice.
I knew this sort of work was special – adorning people with some beautiful gems to help them feel as amazing as they are. I absolutely loved piercing in a new and refreshing way, and I wanted to take my medical experience to help transform the industry. I’ve been a professional body piercer for over ten years now, and it’s absolutely where I am meant to be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I knew I loved piercing, but the people in my life, professionally and personally, made following this path nearly impossible. I heard time and time again that my goals weren’t feasible. This work wasn’t a real career. I’d never been successful. People literally stood in my way. That intense doubt and judgment from people you thought loved you hurts in a uniquely painful way.
I think most of you working in creative or self-expressive industries can relate to struggles this sort of negativity creates. It’s easy to listen. I did for a while, quitting entirely for six months, but I wasn’t done forever. With kids to care for, it’s often far too easy to let your dreams fall away, but I wanted to commit, so I spent years working two jobs and fighting to find my place.
I love piercing and the community I get to connect with, and I did everything I could to build this part of my life into the flourishing, fulfilling career I knew it could be. Nearly a decade later, now with a wonderful Studio and amazing clientele, I’m proud and grateful every day for the struggles that have led me to where I am today.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pierce Your Soul story. Tell us more about the business.
“Pierce Your Soul” is the name I chose for my business. I take a unique and important approach to piercing. Bringing my medical background to this artistry creates a really professional experience for the people I pierce. It’s so important to me to create these beautiful adornments in a high-end environment. A new piercing can transform the way you feel about yourself, and I want everyone who visits to feel welcome and safe.
I specialize in infant piercings, working with the wonderful little angles in a quiet and serene space each weekend morning. I’m grateful for the chance to connect with these little ones and their families, creating a special experience for them. It’s an important memory. Infant, college student, grandparent, or anyone in between – a new piercing on the outside helps you feel a little closer to who you are on the inside. I want to help create that feeling, that moment in a way no other piercer can.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I work out of Earth Altar Studio, nestled a little ways away from the mountains here in LA. I’m right at home in this wonderful the city. I grew up in Ventura, and I’m glad to be here in the heart of SoCal now. It’s such a beautiful, diverse city. So much to do. So much to experience.
The energy of this city has been such a driving force behind my work. There is such an important focus on small business too. It’s amazing to see so many passionate, talented entrepreneurs and artists building lives for themselves with the support of the community. The people here amazing.
