Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Kelm.
Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I purchased my first digital SLR camera when I was thirteen years old. For my first many years of shooting, I would see work I admired and figure out how to create tone, exposure, composition, and story in a similar way. After I worked at these skills, I went on to develop my own way to shoot, choose, and edit great photos.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
The big shifts, changes and trends are already in full effect. Social media has turned everyone into a photographer. The silver lining is that although it is a currently diluted art form, those that have been shooting before the bubble, and keep the passion, will be the studs of the future.
What has been the primary challenge you’ve faced?
The biggest challenge has been distraction. Opportunities in Los Angeles seem inviting and endless. Getting spread too thin through too many endeavors can leave the important things neglected. One of the most resonating meanings of life is creation: creating something that has never been seen or done before. You can pay a lot of money for schooling to learn what other people have already figured out and emulate their craft. Creating original work, that is new to the world, is a contribution to its fullest. I need to remind myself of that all the time!
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
Make all of the mistakes! I learned pretty much everything through messing up along the way. Realizing later that I missed the moment, or over edited, or didn’t make the most of a shoot would frustrate me to the fullest, I would make sure I did not make the same mistake again. Eventually, the frustration will turn to confidence and pride in your process. My favorite question in all of art is “why?”. Why is that the finished image? Why is that the shot? You know you are locked in when you know your style and what gets you to the point that those questions are answered for you, but it still ignites those questions in others.
