Meet J Erving of Human Re Sources in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to J Erving.

J and Troy Carter were partners for 20 years in management, representing variety of talent from Eve, Lady Gaga, Charlie Puth, and Meghan Trainor. When Troy management go to work at Spotify they were trying to figure out how to continue to work together. J wanted to start a distribution company and Spotify became the partner to Human Re Sources. Human Re Sources is partners with Spotify but they are not exclusive to them, they upload to all platforms (Apple, iTunes, Pandora, Deezer, Tidal, etc.).

Human Re Sources is about changing the rules and giving the control back to artist and managers. They only take their 20% on the distribution, they do not participate in 360 rights, they license the master so artist get to keep their records and have ownership of their work.

Due to J’s 20 year management experience the label services are something that comes natural. They like working with good teams and figure out how they can fill in holes. They work directly with artist teams and go through rollouts, help with creative, they have a digital marketing and promo team that they offer to artists as well.

They wanted to create a proof of concept to start and break a couple acts. On the Hip/hop Rap side they started with an artist by the name of YBN Nahmir who’s first single Rubbin Off The Paint has gone platinum and streaming over 118 million and Bounce Out with That which is went Gold and streaming over 101 million. Another act is Brent Faiyaz who is extremely talented and numbers continuing to increase. Final artist is a female pop singer Charlotte Lawrence who’s first single Sleep Talking has over 22mil streams, she was a part of Spotify first Louder Together campaign with Sasha Sloan and Nina Nesbitt where they co-wrote a song together “Psychopath” and performed at a private Spotify event together.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think it’s just learning how people take in music. When you watch kids these days there not listening to the radio. When they are driving they are plugging in their aux cords and listening to Spotify, Apple, and Sound Cloud. The consumption of music has changed and so is the way artist look at the industry.
