Meet Monique Mazer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Mazer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Monique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was six years old I figured out that if I put red lipstick on my nose and then wiped it off I would look “sick”, allowing me to stay home from school and watch cartoons. At the time I didn’t know it, but that’s when my love of makeup blossomed. Fast forward 15 years, I went to Makeup Designory in Burbank where I refined my skills and learned from some of the best artists in the world. After graduating I jumped head first to working in film, TV, and fashion. Much of my work currently revolves around national and worldwide campaigns, celebrities, Olympic athletes, and projects with major networks.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a professional makeup artist has its challenges like any other job. Being my own boss takes a lot of sacrifice and dedication. It’s a lot of saying no to friends and family. I miss events, concerts, vacations and parties. I’m lucky and thankful to be surrounded by supportive friends and family that understand my work.

The biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome was having surgery on my hand. I suffer from Psoriatic Arthritis, which in severe cases destroys delicate joints. I had two joint replacement surgeries on my right hand in a span of 4 months, and yes I am right handed. While in recovery I didn’t know if I’d be able to do what I love again. Doing makeup is such a delicate skill, and the doctors weren’t sure if my thumb would retain full motion to complete those types of tasks.

It was a very long six-month recovery, I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to do what it loved. It was heartbreaking. Turns out its one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! After months of physical therapy and saying “I’ve got this” over and over, I was back to work! It took a ton of practice but I was finally able to work pain-free for the first time in 8 years.

Please tell us about Monique Mazer.
I am the owner of Monique Mazer MAKEUP+HAIR+GROOMING. I use all eco-friendly makeup and hair products. I work mostly in TV, commercial, beauty and fashion. I am known for natural glam, and “no makeup” makeup. I have a love for glowing, lit from within makeup looks and undone hair.

I am proud to be one of the few artists that are transitioning their kit into being more eco-friendly. I stopped using plastic straws years ago, all my disposables (mascara wands, cotton swabs, tissues, bags, etc.) are recyclable. I actually clean the used mascara wands and donate them to be used on animals in need. Any way I can do my part to help the planet, I will. I hope to inspire other artists to do the same!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing I might do differently if I could do it all over again is assisting more at the beginning of my career. It’s so important to learn from other artists and get that on-set experience with a “safety net”. With that being said I wouldn’t change anything else about my journey. It’s brought me and my business to where it is today!
