Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremiah Klein.
Jeremiah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My journey began in the 1990’s where I was trying to be a professional wave rider. The only way to get exposure back then was to get photos published in printed magazines. In that pursuit, I purchased a camera so my friends could take pictures of me which turned into me taking pictures of them which turned into me making pictures for a living.
My passion for waves and the ocean fueled my creativity to document the wave riding lifestyle which opened the door to opportunities with different surf publications in the early to mid-2000’s. My photography as an art form really took off after to work in a photo department of Surfing Magazine and being exposed to so many amazing photographers. That experience gave me a new perspective in seeing the world.
During that time I shot a friend’s wedding and did a horrible job in my opinion. That failure sparked a hunger to learn more about photography and telling people’s stories.
Fast forward to today and I am currently traveling the world creating photos in the surf and wedding world.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
It took me about 15 years into my photography career before I started believing I was an artist. I started taking photographs in 1999 and was more focused on the camera gear copying my peers while only shooting what was in front of me other than actually having a vision and capturing the world the way I saw it. I wish I had focused more about learning how to read light and surrounding myself with talented creative. There is inspiration everywhere but there is something about having a community of creative to bounce ideas off of and experiment that really takes your creativity to the next level.
When people see my images I want them to have an emotional experience. I want to create images with tension or contrast to invoke an emotion. In weddings I want the bride to feel something when she looks through the visual story I captured. Traveling on surf trips I want the surfers to remember how they felt when they explored that uncharted coastline for the first time. My images don’t have a grand political agenda or bring awareness to a crisis, they just capture the simple yet powerful observations about the current world I live in.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Gear is important but it is just a tool. Immerse yourself with other creatives. You get more out of doing and experimenting than reading a manual.
