Conversations with the Inspiring Monique Peyre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Peyre.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have had a passion for styling hair for as long as I could remember. I was on my way to becoming an elementary school teacher, and then halfway through school, I realized I did not enjoy it as much as I loved doing hair. I became licensed in 2015 and have been working behind the chair ever since. In 2017, I was given the opportunity to assist the Hair Department on NBC’s Show, The Voice. This opportunity opened up many doors for me and I continued on the show for a couple seasons. Early 2018, I was able to style hair for The Oscars and work with artists I look up to on different projects. I became an assistant for Exclusive Artists management and through that I was able to assist for an E News segment, and multiple styled photoshoots/red carpets. I truly am thankful and grateful for the people in my life who have helped me come this far. I look forward to continuing on in my journey and learning more each day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It isn’t always easy to work in this industry. It is easy to compare yourself to others and wonder if your work will ever measure up. You ask yourself questions like, “Do I even belong here?”, or “Am I good enough?”. The truth is you ARE. We all have different stories and we all reach our goals in different ways. Your story is unique and no matter how hard it is at times, you need to keep going. There were times when I thought there is no way I will ever break into the industry, but I put myself out there and made it happen! It took a lot of perseverance, waiting, and choosing to continue on in my journey. Do not let anybody bring you down, you are good enough and if you want it enough, it WILL happen. Dreams can become your reality if you believe in yourself and work hard at it. My biggest advice? Never, ever, give up.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Monique Peyre – Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
I am most proud of my balayages, braids, and styling. I do work behind a chair on weekends. As far as color, I feel most comfortable doing balayages and working with dimension/lightening hair. There is something exciting about adding lighter pieces to solid colored hair, it adds personality and fun! Though I do enjoy working in the salon, I am mostly known for my braids and styling, and this is what I like to promote myself in. I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that styling hair is my passion, so I never really feel like I am working. It truly is a gift to have found my passion, and I aspire to help others find theirs as well.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Social media plays a huge role in our society today. I’ve actually gotten most of my opportunities because I engaged in social media and reached out to those stylists I looked up to. If you are local to someone who you look up to, you have nothing to lose by sending them a message saying you would love to assist them in the future! It really isn’t hard and this is actually a great way to get people to take a look at your page and keep you in mind!
