Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Johnson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A couple years ago I was working as a stylist, fashion writer and editor for my blog Mommy Chic when the opportunity arose to begin creating some of my own designs. It was an opportunity I seized and haven’t looked back since.
My experience with styling and editing gave me an idea of how clothing should fit, what types of garments stand out and what is missing in the industry. For me it is all about clothing that makes a stylish statement without looking like one is “trying too hard” while still feeling comfortable.
When I began I had a lot to learn from the fabric, stitching and design side of things and am of course always still learning, but I have finally settled into a groove where I am proud of the clothing I am putting out into the world. It is unique, well made, effortlessly chic and versatile (perfect for a walk on the beach or an evening with friends).
We are also proud to be handmade in LA. In a world filled with “fast fashion” and often inhumane treatment of overseas employees, it feels good to know each garment is made with special care and attention to detail by people that are paid fairly and treated well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha smooth road! What is that? I have always followed the notion that if it were easy everyone would do it. This is especially the case in desirable career fields such as fashion. It can be a world that appears so glamorous and fun. While it has those moments there are plenty of challenging, exhausting and non-glamorous ones.
And when it comes to starting a business it was making it past the second year that was tough. When I first started out I was excited and blindly optimistic, but that only lasts for so long before the reality of just how hard this job is set in, and that is when you need passion and perseverance. I have always said I love what I do so I have to make it successful in order to keep doing it.
Please tell us about JESSICA JOHNSON.
JESSICA JOHNSON clothing is handmade in Los Angeles, inspired by coastal cities and luxurious resorts worldwide. We are not just a clothing brand, but a lifestyle. One that is effortless with a touch of glamour and a lot of happiness. When I design my clothes it is always with a certain location or vacation in mind. I want my clothes to take you to the Amalfi Coast or the beaches of Hawaii whether actually there or just imagining you are while enjoying a sunny day with friends.
All of our clothing is handmade in downtown LA with the utmost passion and attention to detail. Many of our items are adorned with trims from Italy where they too have been crafted with the same passion. It is unique, well made and fairly priced for the quality.
This can be hard to find in the world of “fast cheap fashion” and mass production. For us, it is about quality over quantity.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are of course other designers and brands that inspire me constantly by both design and work ethic, but what has meant the most to me along the way (other than the love of my family) has been the support of my clients. I have a high rate of returning customers and this means the world to me. It tells me that trust in my quality and loves my designs.
There have also been those customers and friends whose compliments and encouraging words have helped me believe in what I was doing. I couldn’t (and still can’t) make it through without that. I will forever be grateful for these people and these moments.
