Today we’d like to introduce you to Valentin Fritz.
Valentin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Germany and My Dad LOVES music. So growing up there was always music playing around the house, in the car – it was a big part of my daily life! So I started playing Drums when I was 5, taught myself some guitar and piano and eventually my Drum teacher took me to his home studio – I fell in love!!
Flash forward, I moved to the states when I was 15, didn’t speak the language and had zero friends. So to pass my time I started writing songs, building my own little home studio and producing tons of (pretty awful) demos. I learned a lot during that time and finally, after High School I moved to Boston to study at Berklee. Shoutout to my parents haha. I studied arranging, writing and production and played Drums in a couple of Bands including my homie Dylan Rockoff.
With him, I got to open for Bon Jovi and Madison Square Garden which was probably the highlights of my musical career so far. While on Tour with Dylan I was super lucky to meet my manager Will and together we put out my first single “Can’t Let Go” in October 2016. That record changed my life. Ever since then I got to work with some amazing people and produced some remixes for R3HAB and Fall Out Boy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has been everything else but a smooth road even though I’ve been pretty lucky!!
I think that the hardest part about being in music, especially being an artist, is that the art becomes such a big part of you and therefore affects you emotionally. I struggle with comparing myself to others around me and wondering: is my music good enough? why am I not doing the same cool shit as this other dude?
You’re always chasing the next big thing, always chasing the next high and sometimes you just gotta stop, look back and acknowledge how far you’ve already come! Before I put out “Can’t Let Go”, I never thought I would even get 10k streams! All my shit had 300 plays or so. But then you get greedy really quickly.
There have been a bunch of sleepless nights, frustration, writer’s block and all that, but looking back I usually only remember all the ups, the positive memories.
VALNTN – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a producer, DJ, remixer and songwriter. I make records or remix other people’s records!
I think what sets me apart from others is that I’ve been a musician all my life and I feel that I have a very well-rounded background and broad knowledge of music. I’ve played in a bunch of different bands throughout my life and arranged, written and conducted music for many different ensembles like Big Bands and Orchestras and I think that gives me an advantage over someone that has only been in the computer their whole musical life.
I meet a lot of producers, especially EDM and Urban producers, that can’t even play an instrument. Don’t get me wrong, some of them are fantastic producers but I think that as a producer it’s important to understand most aspects of music and its history. I’m very proud and lucky that I’ve had so many great and different opportunities so far and I feel like I’m finally able to combine all of these experiences in my music.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Playing Drums at Madison Square Garden.
