Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Goswick.
Austin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The first time I picked up a camera was in high school for a film photography class. I learned the basics of how to use a camera and how to develop film in the darkroom. Four years later I started selling digital SLR cameras and training beginners on the settings, features and gave tips on shooting photography. In 2008, I was asked by my dad to shoot a few images of a huge land development project he was starting and the images I did for him made the Houston Chronicle, Newsweek online and a few other publications. I worked for many years as a part-time photographer and decided to go full time in 2013. This was the best decision and risk I had ever taken. My career took off like I had never imagined. In September of 2015, I moved to LA and within the first month my work was featured on GQ Mexico and I was sought out by veteran fashion photographers to appear on their podcast. The hard work, dedication, education in business and constant networking got me where I am today. Word of advice: Don’t ever think you have reached your maximum potential and expect to learn something new every day.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had times of being so busy with requests for photo shoots and projects as well as times of not getting any phone calls. I learned to be patient and trust that my talents and efforts of marketing my business would pay off. You will always have someone who tries to undercut you financially, mimic your style and claim it as their own, but you have to stick to what you believe is best for your business, reputation and future.
Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The hardest part of my business is finding the large jobs/projects/campaigns. Although, the chase and challenge for the large accounts are always the fun parts to me.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define my success by how satisfied my clients are. I do all I can to make sure they have fun, experience a professional photo shoot, learn a few tips and happy with the final product.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Looking to focus more on building a brand around my passion of photography in landscape, architecture and lifestyle images.
