Today we’d like to introduce you to Jewelia Britton.
Jewelia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in California my family had me outside all of the time. My love for crystals started at a very young age when my dad and I would search for moonstones, every time we visited my great-grandmother who lived near Moonstone Beach in Cambria. Then as a young girl walking around LA’s amazing farmer’s markets and trading posts, witnessing all of the craftsmanship and artistry, must have been quietly training my subconscious. Now, as a 27-year-old woman, I proudly wake up at 6 am to set up my shop at The Melrose Trading Post every Sunday, and October will mark my 2 year anniversary there. My entire business was built on a magical proposal from my husband. I always imagined myself wearing a crystal crown and when I couldn’t find what I wanted I made it myself. I never imagined it being a business but when I met my wedding dress designer, Yanique, and she wanted to care my crowns in her store Dreamers & Lovers, I jumped at the opportunity.
Living in California, I have also been blessed with some of the most incredible music festivals in the world. My favorite being Lightning in a Bottle. Before I even started my business, I kept telling my husband that one day, I was going to be vending there and in 2017 that dream came true. Not only did I get to vend at Lightning in a Bottle, but I also vended at Desert Hearts music festival where I met some of my closest friends to date. One of them being the incredible Lux designer and creator of Lux Muse. This year, Lux and I have partnered up are so excited to share our new products at Desert Hearts and Lightning in a Bottle. It has been an incredible journey and I am only getting started.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I honestly think there is no such thing as a smooth road when starting a business. It is a financial and physical struggle every day which makes every smiling face that leaves my booth with one of my pieces so much more rewarding.
Jewelz By Jewelia – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a one-woman show who designs and hand makes each and every crystal crown, comb, and necklace with the occasional help from my little sisters, mom, and grandma when they come to visit. I am best known for my crystal half-crowns and mini crowns. Each new creation fills me with joy. I feel it is important to try new thing even if then end up not being as popular. You never know when your next piece is going to evolve into something so beautiful that it starts flying off the table.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel I am already successful because I am supporting myself with what I love to do. Money will come and go but if you don’t follow your dreams and pursue your passions, what is the point. Happiness is the key to success and I am lucky to get to live in it with my husband every day.
