Check Out Marit Bakkan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marit Bakkan.

Hi Marit, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved painting, but like many creatives, I didn’t pursue it seriously at first. Instead, I went to business school and began working in marketing, which taught me a lot about storytelling, branding, and how to build something with intention.
About three years ago, I realized that I didn’t have to choose between creativity and business ~ I could do both! So I began painting what I naturally felt drawn to: nature, women, softness, beauty, and the quiet emotional moments that often go unnoticed. Over time, I started combining my love for art with my marketing background, and that slowly grew into what is now Marit Studio.

I’m currently focusing on my art full time, while staying open to where the next chapter may lead ~ creatively, personally, and professionally. My work is deeply inspired by my Scandinavian roots, as well as my love and respect for Japanese art and culture. I’m drawn to the calmness, simplicity, and imperfection found in Japanese aesthetics, and I love blending that with the softness and natural minimalism of Scandinavian design to create a Japandi-inspired feeling.

Through my art, I hope to create pieces that feel calming, feminine, and timeless ~ work that brings a sense of softness, presence, and quiet beauty into a space. My goal with Marit Studio is to create art that feels both personal and peaceful, and that reminds people to slow down, reconnect with beauty, and feel more at home within themselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not always ~ but I think that is part of what makes the journey meaningful. Like many creatives, one of the biggest struggles was allowing myself to take my art seriously and see it as something I could truly build a life around.
After moving to Los Angeles, I had a difficult time getting hired in marketing. At first, that felt discouraging, but over time I started to see it as a sign that maybe I was being redirected toward a different path. Instead of continuing to force a door that wasn’t opening, I began shifting more of my focus toward my art and the vision I had for Marit Studio.
Starting the studio has been a process of trusting myself more, building confidence, and learning to combine my creativity with my marketing background in a way that feels authentic. There have also been the practical challenges of building a small business: finding my artistic voice, pricing my work, sharing it online, and creating consistency while still honoring the slow, intentional nature of the art itself.
I’m still learning as I go, but every challenge has helped shape Marit Studio into something more honest and personal. The road hasn’t been perfectly smooth, but it has felt aligned ~ and that has made it worth continuing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Marit Studio is a fine art studio rooted in softness, nature, femininity, and quiet beauty. I create original paintings, often exploring the connection between women and nature through nude portraits, florals, organic shapes, and soft atmospheric compositions.
My work is primarily painted on raw cotton canvas, using materials like sumi ink and acrylic paint. I’m drawn to the way raw canvas absorbs the medium and creates an organic, imperfect texture ~ something that feels soft, natural, and alive.
My pieces are often soft and quiet, but still expressive. I want them to feel like something you can live with, not just look at.
Right now, I’m also reworking my website and preparing to add many more pieces soon, which feels like an exciting next step for Marit Studio. I’m proud that the studio is growing in a way that feels very true to me ~ bringing together my background in marketing and storytelling, my love for painting, my connection to nature, and my desire to create beauty in an intentional way.
What sets my work apart is the feeling behind it. I’m not trying to create something loud or overly perfect. I’m more interested in creating paintings that feel human, soft, grounding, and timeless ~ pieces that remind people to slow down, reconnect with nature, and find beauty in simplicity.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would just love to say thank you to anyone taking the time to learn about Marit Studio and follow along with this early chapter. Building something creative from the ground up is vulnerable, but it has also been incredibly meaningful.
My hope is that my work can bring a sense of calm, softness, and beauty into people’s homes ~ and maybe also remind others that it is never too late to return to something you have always loved. Sometimes the path is not perfectly clear right away, but the things we are drawn to often find their way back to us.
I’m excited for what is ahead for Marit Studio, especially as I continue developing my style, reworking my website, and sharing more original pieces soon. You can follow along on Instagram at @maritstudio.
