Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Olson.
Debra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Debra O Design out of an idea I studied interior design maybe 25 years ago, worked on friends places, it wasn’t until I moved into a super super super tiny apartment in Brentwood over a garage and that became my palate where I had to get really creative and make it look a lot bigger than what it was when people started to see if they were amazed at what I had done with this tiny space and they’re the journey began . I got a website a business name and people started hiring me to do their homes. Now, what makes me unique and different is that I realize people are wasting a lot of product in a lot of time there buying things they don’t know what to do with they have things in their home they don’t like they don’t like going home because it feels chaotic. I came up with the idea that everybody should be able to afford to come home to their own sanctuary. So, I really wanted to target younger people the tech business divorces people that perhaps are starting over in their lives they got a hodgepodge of things and they just don’t know how to put it together.
It is so important to have our home our safe place our sanctuary it’s so crowded and hectic and crazy out there we need to have that peaceful place to recharge. So, not only do I create your space aesthetically, I get under the bed and in the closet’s and try and get people to use things that only they love and items work for them. So, in the end, this ends up really healing a lot of people emotionally. I’m not just about going in and putting paint on the walls and go and buy new furniture, I try to re-purpose as much as possible saving people money which everybody loves. I’m also unique in that I really really listen to what my clients need and their budget it is not about me. I never share with clients my aesthetic, I pull out of them what their aesthetic is, Who they are and I talk with them until I find out who they are and how they live in their space. Sometimes, they just need handholding to get things in order and rearranged, other times they need paint or just a one-room makeover or I’ve done full remodels. Each client is completely different. So, designer, organizer, home whisperer. I solve problems in your home. I try to make this as easy and uncomplicated and fun for my clients they can be involved as much or as little as they want. I think I’ve just about covered who I am and my vision thank you so much for listening
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, not really, sometimes people will want me to work for free for practically free, the marketing, website, things like that have been a struggle.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Debra o design – what should we know?
I love small spaces I love working on a strict budget and sticking to the budget it allows me to get really really creative.i’m very proud of the fact that people say that they feel better physically emotionally spiritually after I have finished their homes that means a lot to me it’s not just about a structure it’s about a lot more than that. What sets me apart is the fact that I really really listen to my clients they get what they want not what I want I always stick to the budget or come in under budget I’m really easy to work with .those or comments from clients
What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
Riding my horse really fast and flying off into the bushes is something that stands out for me and getting right back on my horse, that sort of seems to be the theme of my life 😂😂 always making my girlfriends pretty and doing their hair and makeup decorating our bedrooms. I competed in gymnastics and track.
