Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Lopez.
Hi Wendy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first developed an interest in skincare around the age of 20 & decided to enroll in esthetician school. During the first few weeks, I honestly felt a lot of regret because much of the curriculum was centered around massage & relaxation based treatments, which wasn’t what I initially expected.
At the school I attended, outside clients could come in and receive discounted facials from students. One client in particular came in with severe acne, and I remember being completely intrigued. My instructor allowed me to perform light extractions using the “finger method,”and that experience completely shifted my perspective. That moment sparked a deep interest in acne and corrective skincare.
After finishing school, I continued my education through the Dermalogica Institute, where I expanded my knowledge of acne focused treatments. From there, I decided to dedicate my career to becoming an acne specialist & helping clients build confidence through healthier skin.
Early on, I rented a small room inside of a hair salon for about 3 years. Eventually, the building owner decided to expand her law firm, and we were forced to leave the space. Although it was stressful at the time, it ended up pushing me to take a leap of faith & open my own business just two months later.
I’ve now been in Bellflower for about seven years & now have currently 10 tenants I lease suites to and the journey has taught me so much about entrepreneurship, and trusting the process. Looking back, some of the moments that felt like setbacks actually became the biggest turning points in my career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business, one of the biggest challenges in the beginning was building clientele. When you’re first starting, especially in the beauty industry, you really have to be creative & willing to put yourself out there. I remember leaving my business cards in the skincare aisles at Target and printing flyers with before & after photos of my work to place on cars in shopping centers.
I was determined to grow, I never said no to a client.
The road itself wasn’t necessarily difficult for me because I was genuinely passionate about what I was doing. More than anything, it felt exciting. I truly enjoyed learning, growing, improving my skills, meeting new clients and understanding different skin types.
Of course, there were moments of uncertainty that came with running a business, but my faith has been one of the biggest sources of reassurance. I trusted that everything would work out the way it was meant to.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in acne focused treatments, and I’m especially known for my extraction work. That’s one of the main reasons many clients come to me, they know I’m passionate about helping them improve their skin in a realistic way.
One thing I really want people to understand is that treating acne goes far beyond simply applying skincare products. There are so many different factors that can contribute to acne, including anatomy, hormones, diet, stress, lifestyle habits, and overall skin health.
I think what sets me apart is the combination of knowledge, honesty, and genuine passion that I bring into my work. I truly enjoy educating my clients & helping them better understand their skin so they can feel more at ease through the process.
More than anything, I’m most proud of the relationships & trust I’ve built with my clients over the years. Skincare can be a very vulnerable journey for a lot of people, especially those struggling with acne so the fact that clients trust me not only with their skin but being open enough to share their struggles with me means a lot.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Ultimately, none of this would be possible without God. Beyond everything, I have a strong belief that it all flows from the hand of God. My faith has been one of the biggest sources of strength & determination throughout my career.
My mom also deserves a lot of credit. She taught me so much about hard work, perseverance, and always being solution oriented. By my third month in school, she had created a little skincare studio for me inside our living room. It’s actually the same treatment bed she bought me that I still use to this day. She has always been my biggest encourager and was actually my very first client.
I’m also incredibly grateful for my clients and supporters who have trusted me throughout the years. A lot of my growth came through word of mouth and loyal clients who continued believing in me and supporting my work.
