Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Lewis.
Hi Josie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Bellflower, Ca to a woman who is a force to be reckoned with, but predominantly grew up in Arizona before ultimately settling in Chicago. And having experielnced so many different people and walks of life, I’ve grown to really gain an affection for the infinite colors humans can come in. That perspective has inspired my moral compass, my non-profit work, my poetry and ultimately, my art. Heavily inspired by themes of Femininity and its duality with masculinity, the cosmos, anatomy and Black identity, my works explore the intimacy, the intricacy and grandiosity of human experience through the lens of a Black trans woman. My current artistic goals weave into my non-profit work in ways I’m excited to bring into fruition in the coming months, and I plan to debut my current series in a 2027 solo show.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I’ll admit my journey has likely been easier than many others, particularly fellow Black trans people, it would be a disservice to myself to say it has been without obstacles. The financial burden of attempting to make art and fund community work in a time where our leaders seem to value neither has been a real and constant struggle, and would be impossible without the collective action of so many wonderful folks who are still dedicated to doing the work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am primarily a painter with pieces primarily made using raw ink and acrylic paint applied to large wood panel canvases. My work specializes in the human form and hair, particularly Black women and has an emphasis on exploring human anatomy. My pieces tend to stand out due to size and the unconventional canvas choice, but also in the stark line work and color blocking, as well as incorporating elements of my poetry. To date, I’m most proud of my 2026 show calendar, having managed to have pieces featured in one show per month since December, a goal I’ve had for a while. I also incorporate art into my non-profit work and am excited to the slate of activations and events we have planned for 2026 and beyond.
How do you define success?
Success is the ability to live comfortably while also having the capacity and resources to support and invest in the communities that matter to you.
