Check Out Wara Pornkulwat’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wara Pornkulwat.

Hi Wara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Patong, Phuket, Thailand—an area known for its vibrant nightlife and beach culture. My connection to film began during a time when I had to stay indoors for months as a child, due to frequent reports of abductions in the area. During that period, television and a stack of DVDs became my constant companions, quietly shaping my interest in cinema.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has never been a smooth road. I have to prove myself all the time, and it will never stop. Maybe that is called Learning?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a cinematographer from Thailand, specializing in realistic lighting and commercial filmmaking. Over the past five years, I’ve shot more than a hundred commercials, along with a wide range of music videos.

Beauty campaigns always have a special spot in my heart— they’re the kind of projects I naturally gravitate toward and rarely turn down. Recently, however, working on a Netflix series became a major turning point in my career and shifted my focus more deeply toward narrative storytelling.

My latest narrative work was on the Netflix horror anthology series Terror Tuesday: Extreme. I served as cinematographer for Episode 4, The Vow, directed by my longtime friend and college collaborator, Abhichoke Chandrasen. The episode blends horror and drama, as Chandrasen often shares: “Underneath every good horror lies a good drama.”

What’s next?
I recently moved to Los Angeles and am excited to continue building my career here at the same level I worked in Thailand or beyond. I’m looking forward to expanding my network within both the narrative and commercial filmmaking communities, while continuing to grow as a cinematographer through new collaborations and stories.
