Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Duarte.
Hi Joe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve toured across the U.S. working with brands, companies, artists, and live events directing, capturing, and producing content across both print and digital media. Working primarily within the dance and entertainment industry, I developed a deep appreciation for capturing movement and emotion in a way that feels cinematic, expressive, and authentic. What started as a passion for photography and storytelling evolved into a collaborative creative process focused on helping brands communicate identity and energy through visual media.
Five years ago, moving to the South Bay completely shifted my perspective creatively and personally. I immediately connected with the close-knit El Porto and Manhattan Beach community, and it quickly became home. Growing up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and later continuing my education in St. Augustine, Florida, I’ve always been drawn to coastal towns, creative communities, and the feeling of being close to the ocean. There’s something grounding and inspiring about that environment that naturally influences my work and creative style.
As I continue growing Strand Studios here in the South Bay, I’m excited to collaborate with more local brands, businesses, artists, hotels, restaurants, and community-driven companies. Being able to combine storytelling, movement, and visual identity while building genuine relationships in the place I now call home has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for where the journey has led so far.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most creative careers, it definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. A lot of people see the final photos, videos, or the clients I’ve worked with, but they don’t always see the years of uncertainty, long travel days, financial risk, burnout, or the pressure that comes with building something on your own. There were years where I was living out of suitcases, traveling nonstop, balancing editing until 3 a.m., and trying to turn creative passion into a sustainable business while learning how to value my work and balance the artistic side with the business side.
Moving across the country and rebuilding community and clientele in the South Bay also came with challenges. When I moved to Manhattan Beach, I essentially had to start over in many ways by building relationships, networking, and introducing my work to a completely new market. Looking back, though, those experiences pushed me to grow both creatively and personally. I’ve learned that growth rarely happens during comfortable seasons, and every challenge has helped shape not only my business, but also the way I connect with people and tell stories through my lens.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a visual storyteller and creative director based in Manhattan Beach, working through Strand Studios. I specialize in photography and motion content that helps businesses build strong visual identity—primarily for restaurants, hotels, boutiques, bars, lifestyle brands, and creative industries throughout the South Bay. I also shoot portraiture and professional headshots for teams and staff, helping businesses present a cohesive and elevated human side of their brand.
I’m known for creating cinematic, intentional content that feels both elevated and authentic. Whether it’s a hospitality brand, a local boutique, or a lifestyle campaign, my focus is on capturing the atmosphere and emotion behind a business in a way that connects with people and feels true to the brand.
What I’m most proud of is growing from national touring work into building long-term relationships within the South Bay creative and business community. What sets my work apart is the balance of artistry and strategy—I don’t just document what a brand looks like, I help define how it’s perceived and experienced.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something people are often surprised to learn is how much of my work happens outside of the camera. A lot of what I do is actually built on creative direction, strategy, and relationship building—understanding a brand’s identity, how they want to be perceived, and translating that into a visual language before we ever start shooting.
Most people assume it’s just about showing up and capturing content, but in reality, I spend a lot of time studying the business itself—its energy, its audience, and its story. Whether it’s a restaurant, hotel, boutique, or local brand, I’m usually thinking about how every visual decision ties back to how someone will experience that business in real life.
I think that’s something that surprises people who know my work—it’s less about just creating “content,” and more about building a cohesive identity that lives across platforms and in the real world.
