Conversations with Jose Tapia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Tapia.

Hi Jose, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always carried a creative spark, but for a long time, I didn’t fully realize the potential of what happens when you pour 100% of your mind into a passion. About eight years ago, I was working as a private celebrity chauffeur in Los Angeles, driving high-profile clients. During the long hours of waiting between pickups, I turned to social media out of boredom.
At the time, I was running a side hustle reselling wholesale snapbacks, and I stumbled across a TikTok video of someone customizing hats. Intrigued, I started digging deeper, which led me to a video of an artist completely transforming a pair of sneakers.
I immediately ordered a small starter paint kit and experimented on a pair of my own daily-worn shoes. The instant feedback from friends and strangers was overwhelming—and the custom orders started rolling in right away. Through countless hours of sleepless nights, intense resilience, and non-stop refinement of my craft, that small paint kit turned into a full-time career. Today, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with some of the biggest names in the entertainment and sports industries, gaining local recognition, and being featured by major news outlets.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been anything but smooth. Starting out, my biggest obstacle was mastering the technical side of the craft completely on my own through trial and error. Beyond learning how to paint on leather and rubber, the real struggle was managing the transition from a stable job with high-profile clients to the reality of a growing creative business. It took years of sleepless nights and relentless discipline to turn those early growing pains into a sustainable, recognized business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a sneaker artist, I take everyday kicks and turn them into one-of-a-kind, wearable art. I specialize in hand-painted details, crisp lines, and custom concepts that you just can’t walk into a store and buy. I’m mostly known for my super clean execution and the ability to take someone’s wild idea, personality, or brand and bring it to life on a shoe.
What sets me apart is that I can blend two completely different worlds. On any given day, I might be designing a high-end, exclusive pair for a celebrity client who expects absolute perfection, or I might be hanging out in the community, mentoring kids and teaching youth art classes to show them how powerful creative expression can be.
I’m most proud of the fact that I built this from nothing but a small paint kit and a lot of grit. Seeing my work get local recognition and end up on the news is dope, but what I’m truly proud of is using my hands and my hustle to inspire the next generation. I get to show these kids that you don’t have to follow a traditional path to be successful—you just have to put your mind to it and outwork everyone else.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see custom sneaker artistry shifting from a niche subculture into a mainstream form of fine art and education. People are moving away from mass-produced products; everyone wants something unique that reflects who they are, and sneakers are the ultimate canvas for that.
Because of that shift, the future isn’t just about making shoes for people—it’s about teaching the next generation how to tap into their own creativity. That’s why this summer, I’m launching a sneaker painting and arts & crafts workshop for kids. I’ll be teaching them different forms of art, building their confidence, and showing them how to bring their imagination to life on a real piece of footwear. It’s not just an art class; it’s a space where kids get to learn a real-world, hands-on craft, think like designers, and walk away with a piece of art they can actually wear and be proud of. Sneaker art completely changed the trajectory of my life, and I want to give kids the tools and the spark to find their own creative path early.
