Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Dixson.
Hi Kierra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been anything but traditional, and honestly, I think that’s what shaped me most. I’m originally from Detroit, and growing up there taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of community. Before stepping fully into public relations and entrepreneurship, I worked in social work and case management, where I developed a deep understanding of people, communication, and advocacy. Those experiences taught me how to navigate high-pressure situations, listen intentionally, and support individuals through pivotal moments in their lives — skills that still influence how I approach my work today.
Over time, I realized I had a natural ability to help people communicate their stories in a way that felt both authentic and impactful. That realization eventually led me to launch Melaninaire Public Relations, where I began helping entrepreneurs, creatives, nonprofits, and brands strengthen their visibility and brand positioning through strategic storytelling and media relations.
As my vision expanded, so did the brand. What started as a public relations agency evolved into a larger ecosystem under Melaninaire, Inc., where I’m now building platforms focused on communications, education, culture, and accessibility within the PR industry. One of the projects I’m especially excited about is HAÜS OF PR, a self-service public relations platform designed to help entrepreneurs and creatives learn how to navigate publicity independently and confidently.
At the same time, community impact has remained a major part of my purpose. I’m also developing the Melaninaire Foundation to provide mentorship, outreach, and professional development resources for underserved communities, entrepreneurs, and job seekers.
Today, I see my work as a blend of strategy, storytelling, and service. Every chapter of my journey — from social work to entrepreneurship — contributed to how I lead, communicate, and advocate for others now. I’m still evolving, still building, and still learning, but that evolution is exactly what makes the journey meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think the challenges are what shaped both my perspective and the way I lead today. One of the biggest struggles was navigating multiple career transitions while still trying to build stability for myself. Moving from social work and case management into entrepreneurship and public relations required a major mindset shift. I had to learn how to trust my creativity and strategic instincts while also teaching myself the business side of things in real time.
Another challenge was learning how to build something sustainable without constantly feeling pressured to rush the process. Social media can make it seem like everyone is achieving overnight success, but behind the scenes, entrepreneurship often involves long hours, uncertainty, financial risk, and a lot of trial and error. There were moments where I questioned whether I was moving fast enough or doing enough, especially while balancing multiple responsibilities and trying to grow a business with intention rather than just for appearances.
I also think there’s a unique challenge that comes with being deeply connected to your work. Public relations is very people-centered, and because I genuinely care about the clients and communities I serve, I had to learn the importance of boundaries, balance, and protecting my own energy. You can’t pour into everyone else while neglecting yourself in the process.
At the same time, every obstacle taught me something valuable. The difficult seasons strengthened my adaptability, communication skills, and resilience. They forced me to become resourceful, strategic, and more intentional about the kind of legacy I want to build through Melaninaire Public Relations and Melaninaire, Inc.. Looking back, I don’t think I would lead with the same level of empathy, clarity, or purpose if the road had been easy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Melaninaire Public Relations?
Melaninaire Public Relations is a boutique public relations agency focused on strategic storytelling, brand visibility, and culturally aware communications. I work with entrepreneurs, creatives, nonprofits, and purpose-driven brands to help them strengthen their public presence in a way that feels authentic, intentional, and impactful. My work spans media relations, brand positioning, campaign strategy, press development, community engagement, and overall narrative building.
What I believe sets Melaninaire Public Relations apart is the combination of strategy and humanity. I don’t approach public relations as simply “getting attention.” I approach it as building trust, creating meaningful connections, and helping clients communicate their vision clearly and confidently. Because of my background in social work and case management, I naturally lead with empathy, active listening, and emotional intelligence, which allows me to connect deeply with both clients and audiences. That perspective influences how I develop campaigns, pitch stories, and position brands.
I’m also very intentional about working with brands and individuals who have substance behind what they do. I love helping people uncover the deeper narrative behind their business rather than relying solely on trends or surface-level marketing. A lot of my work focuses on helping clients refine their message, identify their voice, and build visibility that feels sustainable instead of performative.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the fact that Melaninaire Public Relations continues to evolve while staying rooted in purpose. The agency has grown from an idea into a platform that represents creativity, culture, professionalism, and community impact all at once. I’m especially proud of the relationships I’ve built and the trust clients place in me to help shape and protect their stories.
I want readers to know that Melaninaire Public Relations is more than a publicity agency; it’s a strategic partner for brands looking to grow with intention. Whether someone is launching a business, building a campaign, strengthening their public image, or trying to better connect with their audience, my goal is always to help them show up with clarity, confidence, and authenticity.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that growth requires both patience and authenticity. Early on, I thought success was about reaching certain milestones as quickly as possible, but over time I realized that building something meaningful takes consistency, adaptability, and a willingness to evolve without losing your core values.
I’ve also learned that not every opportunity is meant for you, and that alignment matters just as much as ambition. In public relations especially, it can be easy to chase visibility for the sake of visibility, but I’ve become much more intentional about the partnerships, projects, and environments I choose to invest my energy into. The strongest opportunities are usually the ones that align with your purpose, your values, and the kind of impact you actually want to create.
Another major lesson has been understanding the importance of trusting my own voice and vision. Entrepreneurship comes with constant comparison and outside opinions, but I’ve learned that authenticity is what creates longevity. People connect most with brands and leaders who are genuine, consistent, and clear about who they are.
Through building Melaninaire Public Relations, I’ve learned that success is not just about visibility or recognition; it’s about creating something sustainable, impactful, and rooted in purpose. That perspective has completely changed how I approach both business and leadership.
