Today we’d like to introduce you to Talia Toms.
Hi Talia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an actor, it all started because my modeling agent at the time suggested I begin to do commercials to make more money. I resisted the idea of acting at first, but got in a class and was totally bit by the bug. After many years of hustling in the pursuit of my acting career I got to a point where I was completely burned out and lost sight of myself.
At the time I had an agent and was auditioning so I honored that, but everything else I was doing to try and make it in my career – like going to acting classes, taking headshots, going to casting director workshops – I just stopped doing. I had to begin to connect with myself and piece together other areas of my life that were falling by the way side.
Little did I know the less I did for my career and the more I focused on myself and my life, my career started to take off. I wanted other actors to know the secret to becoming a working actor without such heartache, desperation and struggle attached. So I started The Actor’s Flow.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would love to say it’s been a smooth road, but we don’t grow from that place or evolve to the highest version of ourselves without adversity. I honestly could list at least a handful of bumps in the road through my life, but as far as being a working actress…
The hardest job I had to do on set was when I was playing the role of Jane in ABC’s Wicked City. My mom had just passed, and when it was near time for me to shoot a wave of grief just came over me. I had to do everything in my power to just dial in on my character – what I was doing, who I was talking to, and what I was wanting.
Another challenge I faced was when I had to step away from acting for six years because of an unexpected health journey. I had gained great momentum in my acting career at that point, but could no longer show up to my auditions and roles the way I needed to, so I had to surrender. I didn’t know when I would return. I still have some chronic conditions that I am in the process of healing, but it is nice to now be stepping back into my career and on my terms.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Career and Alignment Coach for actors and I created the Grounded + Unstoppable Framework, which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s not a catchy name slapped on a program. It’s a real, tangible framework with actual tools and exercises that actors can apply to their lives and feel the difference.
Here’s what makes it different. Every other coach, every acting teacher, every career resource out there is focused on one thing: do this, do that, and you’ll book the job. And look, I get it. That’s what actors want, myself included. But nobody is talking about what happens in between. Nobody is talking about what happens when a show gets canceled, when an audition doesn’t go the way you hoped, when the industry just feels like too much. Nobody is giving actors a real tool to express themselves through it and keep going.
What I specialize in is helping actors build a grounded, full foundation for their whole life, not just their career. Because when your life is solid, your career has something real to grow from. Health, mindset, relationships, finances, all of it. That’s the foundation. And from that place, the career momentum becomes sustainable instead of exhausting.
What I’m most proud of is that this framework actually works because I’ve lived it. I know what it feels like to lose yourself chasing a career. I also know what happened when I stopped doing all the things and started actually taking care of my life. My career started moving. That’s the proof of concept. And now I get to hand actors the tools to experience that for themselves.
I created this because I wanted actors to suffer less and book more. It really is that simple.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
It’s so easy to get type cast in the industry as an actor and how I come across os grounded and more of a serious type personality and leader on Instagram, but I definitely have a goofy side with a Lucille Ball type personality too. I’m not easy to put in a box and my favorite go to medicine for life is full on laughter.
