Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Hill II.
Hi Roger, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Roger Bryant Hill II, aka Roger Dodger. I’m an adult diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (form of Autism). At the age of 3, my mom was told that I was ‘mentally retarded’ back when the terms weren’t that great. Afterwards, I started occupational therapy and speech & language therapy at a place called LA Speech and Language Therapy Center. All of that gave me the necessary tools to learn how to navigate life as a neurodivergent and it helped me through school and find meaning employment. Today, I am a DJ and a health & wellness coach while working in Special Education with LAUSD.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the struggles I have battled along the way have been my sensitivity to loud noises and self-comparison. I was once a child who would cover his ears when someone flushes public bathrooms and with the help of LA Speech and my mom taking me to concerts with amplified music, I was able to build up the courage to start my DJ career. I also have a tendency to compare myself to others with typical (normal) behavior and be hard on myself whenever I don’t do what somebody else does. I’ve quickly had to learn that loving yourself and the flaws that you have can be your biggest super power and my Autism is doing just that for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a DJ, a health and wellness coach and I manage my own event brand called Frequency XChange, where frequency is energy and exchange is trade, with my events I make sure that we trade energy. I host events as far as hiking, fitness and networking events. I use my DJing skills to incorporate music into my nutrition programs and fitness events. I am proud of how far I have come as a DJ, especially considering that I used to be hypersensitive to loud noises. I believe what sets me apart from others is my autism and that fact that it is my superpower. As a DJ and a coach, I am able to read energy and have emotional intelligence when it comes to knowing if they like the music and the vibe that I am giving them. And I believe a DJ that can read the room and vibe with the crowd makes for the best DJs.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
On April 8th, I was on KBLA 1580 with Dominique DiPrima for a radio interview on her Wealth Building Wednesdays segment. I was proud of that because I feel like the public got to hear my story as a neurodivergent adult and I was able to raise awareness. I would definitely consider myself an Autism Advocate.
