Check Out Ivy Sang’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Sang.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello! I’m a songwriter originally from a small town in the East Bay Area called Brentwood, but I moved to LA about four years ago to fully pursue my career as an artist.

Thanks to my grandparents’ record collection, my childhood was defined by a deep, abiding love for soul and funk music. But it wasn’t until my teenage years, when I started playing in bands, that my friends introduced me to everything from heavy rock ’n’ roll to East Bay punk and early blues stuff. All that exposure would eventually become the blueprint for my sound today.

After moving to LA, I put together a killer 4-piece band and started playing shows throughout the area at places like Daddy Diamonds, Backyard Party, Root Cellar (DIY Spot), South Bay Music Connect, and so on.

By immersing myself in the scene and drawing inspiration from all walks of life, I wrote a collection of four songs that resulted in my debut EP, “Go Ahead, Laugh at Me”, now available on all platforms. Every song was recorded live with the band, and it goes from a high-energy ska-punk anthem to a dreamy country ballad. Carefully crafted with the intention of making the listener truly feel something.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being raised in a very close-minded and conservative town, I’ve always carried this unnerving fear of being “too weird” or “too much”. But once I learned to fully embrace those quirks, it only gave me the courage to be my true, authentic self and stop wasting so much time caring about what other people thought. I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by people that see me for who I really am.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I write punk-blues music with tons of soul, and perform these songs either live with my band or as solo act with just guitar and vocals. I also watch nothing, but cartoons – there’s a reason for that, which I’ll get to in a second.

I think what sets me apart from other acts in the scene is the raw, immersive energy of my live show and the eclectic nature of my songwriting. There’s also my distinct eye for fashion, my visual aesthetic inspired by classic animation, and my complete devotion to the color scheme of green-and-purple.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Get passionate. Get obsessed. Get off your phone. Get your hands dirty and start actually making things. It doesn’t have to be your Magnum Opus or your Mona Lisa. What truly matters at the end of the day is how much love and intention you are willing to put into your craft. The world will recognize that, when the time is right.

And it’s okay if things don’t work out, because the true regret comes from never trying in the first place. So, don’t take yourself too seriously 🙂
