Conversations with Jessica Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gomez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always loved photography growing up… I used to play around with my parents’ film cameras all the time. Even back then, I was drawn to the feeling of freezing moments that would otherwise pass by too quickly. But photography became something much deeper for me after I had my children.

My first child was born in 2019, and becoming a mother completely changed the way I viewed time and memories. I realized just how fleeting moments really are… especially watching your children grow right before your eyes. That realization is what first inspired me to start photographing families and maternity sessions. I wanted to preserve the emotions and connections that people never want to forget.

Around that time, my fiancé saw how passionate I was becoming about photography and bought me my very first professional camera… but only on one condition: that I truly dive into this business and give it my all. I did exactly that… and honestly, even more than either of us expected. What started as a creative outlet quickly became something that completely changed my life.

A couple years later, I naturally found my way into wedding photography, and that’s when everything really clicked for me creatively. I realized I connected with it on a much deeper level. Before becoming a mom, I always loved hiking, exploring new places, and going on adventures… and wedding photography brought that side of me back to life. I love traveling, experiencing new environments, meeting new people, and hearing their stories. Every couple brings something different and meaningful, and getting to document one of the most emotional days of their lives is something I never take for granted.

Photography, for me, has never just been about taking photos. It’s about preserving feeling, connection, movement, and the moments people don’t realize will someday mean everything. That’s what continues to inspire me every day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I definitely struggled in the beginning. More than anything, I was adamant about becoming better… not only as a photographer, but as a person too. When I first entered the photography world, I reached out to numerous photographers hoping for guidance and connection. Some weren’t very welcoming, which was discouraging at first, but there were a few who genuinely helped me along the way. Over time, I realized not everyone is going to pave the path for you… sometimes you have to create it yourself. I learned that the real growth and hard work has to come from within because no one else can do it for you.

A big part of my struggle also came from becoming a new mom while pursuing photography. I constantly felt guilty leaving my children to chase this dream, and for a while it felt bittersweet every time I walked out the door for a session. But after each shoot, I realized photography was filling my cup in a way I desperately needed creatively and emotionally. I would come home feeling more inspired, fulfilled, and honestly like a better version of myself… which ultimately made me a better mom too.

Photography is also incredibly subjective, and finding your style doesn’t happen overnight. I knew the feeling and emotion I wanted my work to have from the beginning, but I didn’t yet understand the technical fundamentals of how to fully bring that vision to life. That took years of learning, experimenting, failing, growing, and continuing to put in the work even when things felt uncertain. Looking back now, I’m grateful for that process because it shaped both my work and who I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Southern California wedding photographer, though I travel all throughout both Northern and Southern California, along with a few destinations across the United States each year. While weddings are my main focus, I’m also well known for couples photography, especially engagement and proposal sessions.

My style is rooted deeply in documentary storytelling with an editorial approach. I’m drawn to real emotion, movement, connection, and the in-between moments that often end up meaning the most. I want my couples to look back at their photos years from now and not just remember how everything looked… but how it truly felt. I love balancing genuine moments with an artistic and cinematic perspective that still feels natural to who they are.

One of the things I’m most proud of is building a business that originally started as a creative outlet. At first, photography was simply something that fulfilled me emotionally and creatively, but over time I realized this could truly become my profession and my life’s work. Now I get to say that I genuinely have the best job in the world… and my clients know how excited I get when I’m inspired by their vision. I become fully invested in telling their story in a way that feels authentic to them.

As for what sets me apart, I honestly believe there’s room for everyone in this industry, and every couple naturally connects with the photographer who’s meant for them. But if I had to choose, I’d say one thing that makes my experience different is how direct, honest, and emotionally invested I am with my clients. Communication is incredibly important to me. I’m very upfront about expectations, timelines, emotions, and how wedding days realistically unfold because I want my couples to feel fully comfortable and genuinely taken care of throughout the process.

I also think being both a mother and a documentary-style photographer has shaped the way I approach people. I pay close attention to emotion, energy, and connection. I know how meaningful these moments become over time, and I never take for granted that people are trusting me to preserve memories they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

How do you think about happiness?
A lot of things make me happy, honestly. Seeing other people happy makes me happy. Being around my kids makes me happy… even though motherhood is definitely not the easiest job in the world. Some of my favorite moments are the simplest ones… laughing together, watching movies, staying in, and just enjoying life for what it is.

I’ve learned that happiness for me isn’t always tied to huge accomplishments or big moments. It’s usually found in the quieter parts of life… spending time with family, slowing down, taking care of myself, getting enough sleep (which I love), and being present with the people I care about most.

Photography also brings me a lot of happiness because I get to witness people during some of the most emotional and meaningful moments of their lives. I think that’s why I connect so deeply with documentary storytelling… I genuinely love human connection and emotion. At the end of the day, it really is the little things in life that mean the most to me.
