Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris LaFaye.
Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started with my great-great-grandmothers 100+ year old violin that I’ve been fortunate enough to play since 8 years old. From there, I developed a deep connection with music, and combined that passion with my love for working on computers to craft the career I have today. I now am a Music and Sound Editor for Lucasfilms at Skywalker Ranch. This is one of those dream jobs, and I am so grateful to be here. Through living in countries in Latin America with my Spanish teacher Mother, attending Berklee College of Music, becoming a multi-instrumentalist, working across the media arts industry, and participating on projects that reach millions of people–I approach every day with a desire to be creative and change the world in my own way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
A journey down the path that leads to a professional role in the arts is always filled with adversity. I was lucky to be born in a family that pushed me to be the best version of myself. As a a single parent, my Mother struggled with her ADHD musician son at times, but often had to work to make ends meet. I spent a lot of my childhood alone on devices. In a way, I am able to navigate technology like I can because of this time, and I don’t look back with resentment.
When I first attended Berklee College of Music I was incredibly intimidated. I was now a small fish in a huge pond, and the opportunity for public humiliation was consistent. Putting yourself out there is so challenging, and it’s taken me years to deeply trust myself. Surrounding yourself with the right friends and collaborators might be the most difficult but rewarding facet of a career in the arts. I sought out these relationships at Berklee, and at times I was rejected (or just straight up ignored). The hardest part of these experiences is moving on.
If I had to put my significant career challenges in a list, I would say: finding the right people, learning to trust myself, and understanding what my role is or could be amongst other professionals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I play many roles, but overall I am a sort of Music and Sound Mercenary. I’ve worked on films such as the recent John Candy documentary (for which I was nominated for a MPSE Golden Reel), produced / released electronic music under my own artist alias’s (LaFaye / Beauregard) that has garnered millions of streams, and produced for other artists that have signed with labels like Warner. I absolutely love music and sound–they are the drivers for my life goals.
I am most proud of where I am at now, which is working for some of the most high caliber individuals and companies. I’ve been able to start a freelance career from my home studio, which can be a slippery slope. I’ve proven to both myself and others that I can deliver exceptional results on a schedule. I find myself being contacted by potential clients rather than seeking out work. I believe that through my positive attitude, dedication to completing goals, and years of practice that I am an individual who sticks out.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
