Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Leo Garcia.
Hi Alex Leo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I wish it was this super glamorous story of like “Ive always known since I was a kid” or something like that just isn’t the case for me. I took this film program in high school. When I started it I sort of thought it would be an easy A & wouldn’t have to worry about taking an elective class but MAN was I wrong.
It ended up becoming one of the more difficult & more demanding classes that I had. From there I thought “Okay I gotta try to get into this more I NEED to pass this class” & from what was originally energy that was exerted into the class out of the need to pass turned into this wave of self discovery & creativity that I would’ve never imagined for myself. At that point in my life I hadn’t mapped out anything passed 18. Now suddenly it’s pandoras box.
From there I had a friend who also had the same class text me saying “Yo I need a cinematographer for a music video on this day, I got like 60 bucks for you. You wanna do it?” I said yeah I’m down & the rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel like self doubt/imposter syndrome is like one of those things I can’t shake even to this day. I
t’s always been a mental hurdle I can’t completely get over. Theres the technical stuff where you’re trying to figure out how to do something yes but theres always multiple approaches out there can have to achieve something so in that sense there isn’t a barrier mentally but the main challenge especially going into larger projects/clients I still have the thought of like “Damn can I even do this?”
I wish I had an answer of how I moved away from that sort of thinking but it’s still something i deal with on a daily basis.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Im a cinematographer with an incredibly strong eye for visual storytelling with a creative style founded in atmospheric and dynamic imagery.
Throughout myworking career, I’ve freelanced working for brands such as Top Dawg Entertainment, LA Dodgers, Apple Music, Def Jam Records, and Flight Club. Developing my voice in music videos, I’ve has lensed for music videos for artists such as Los Tucanes De Tijuana, Regulo Caro, Ray Vaughn, and Joony.
Beyond my on-set contributions, I actively engage with fellow creatives on my podcast, “The ALG Show,” discussing experiences in the film industry as well as what goes on in the day to day of creative individuals.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Depends on the day. I have my long term goals for myself that I would also classify as success when I achieve those things but I think lately it’s been more defined as the smaller things in life. A recent example would be being able help friends achieve certain things whether its a personal project of theres or something as simple as talking though a rut that my friend is in.
I think if the people around me are successful in anything in any capacity then it’s success that I inherit. Can’t go at this thing of ours alone you know?
