Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Gerard.
Hi Julie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Four community members saw a need for a local organic weekday farmers market . Our mission is to provide access to healthy food, cultivate community and promote education.
We began following Covid. Our community was in need of connection. We have grown over five years to be a central place to gather, eat, celebrate and learn in community. We are considered to be the old vibe of Ojai, where kids can play and be free, parents can shop and socialize, elders can share their wisdom, teens can be part of a paid entrepreneurial group and everyone can enjoy the local music together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We struggled to find the perfect place but ultimately found a central location in the middle of Ojai, in the courtyard of the Ojai unified school district headquarters in the grassy area surrounded with old growth trees.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The market is like no other because it is on grass. Folks are there to shop for their weekly food but because of the spectacular surroundings and community connection they lay out a blanket, grab some food and stay for the whole market.
It’s a time to slow down and participate with friends and family.
What matters most to you? Why?
Community matters most. Educating folks about our local food supply and resources while establishing connections to farmers and why it matters.
Having the support of community is vital to raising healthy kids, thriving as adults and transitioning into later years. We all need support at every stage of life.
