Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Munoz.
Patricia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A few years ago, I moved from Spain to Los Angeles, which is arguably one of the world’s biggest hubs for wellness and preventive health.
Ironically, shortly after arriving, I began experiencing significant digestive issues. Like many people, I found myself navigating a frustrating cycle of symptoms, conflicting advice, and long waits to access specialized testing and care. That experience sparked a deep personal interest in understanding how the body works—especially the gut and its connection to overall health.
To better understand my own health, I trained as a Health Coach and immersed myself in the science of nutrition, lifestyle medicine, and the gut microbiome. Living in Los Angeles also exposed me to a very different approach to healthcare: one that emphasizes prevention, self-knowledge, and easy access to advanced tools for understanding your health.
I was struck by how much more accessible gut health solutions were in the U.S. People could gain meaningful insights into their digestive health without waiting months for appointments or navigating complex healthcare systems.
That’s when I saw an opportunity.
I wanted to bring that same level of accessibility, innovation, and empowerment to Spain.
Together with my co-founder, I decided to launch Guts in Spain, a digestive health company that makes advanced at-home gut testing more accessible. Through our tests, people can analyze their gut microbiome, SIBO, and food sensitivities from home and receive clear, science-based digital reports designed to help them better understand their bodies.
Our mission is simple: to give people the tools and knowledge they need to take control of their digestive health and, ultimately, improve their quality of life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building Guts has definitely not been a smooth road, but that’s also what has made the journey so meaningful.
One of our biggest challenges has been navigating the regulatory environment in Europe. Because we operate in the in vitro diagnostics space, there are very strict requirements around product validation, labeling, and communication. While that creates additional complexity, it has also pushed us to build the company on a very solid scientific and regulatory foundation from day one.
Another major challenge has been earning people’s trust. Digestive health is an area where many people are struggling, but it’s also a space filled with misinformation and increasingly aggressive marketing. From the beginning, we made the decision to focus on scientific rigor, transparency, and education rather than making exaggerated promises. Building trust takes longer, but we believe it is the only sustainable way to create a meaningful brand.
On a personal level, one of the most interesting aspects of this journey has been building the company between two worlds. Living in Los Angeles exposed me to innovations in wellness and preventive health that are often years ahead of what reaches Europe. Spain, however, represents a tremendous opportunity because consumers are becoming increasingly proactive about their health, and many concepts that gain traction in the U.S. eventually resonate strongly there as well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Guts (@guts.biotech)?
Guts is a digestive health company making advanced gut testing more accessible to consumers in Spain.
We offer at-home tests for the gut microbiome, SIBO, and food sensitivities, allowing people to collect samples from home and receive clear, science-based digital reports that help them better understand what may be influencing their digestive health and overall well-being.
What sets Guts apart is that we combine clinical-grade testing with a modern, consumer-friendly experience. In Europe, these types of analyses have traditionally been difficult to access, often requiring multiple specialist appointments, long wait times, and highly technical reports that are hard for patients to interpret. We wanted to change that.
Our goal is to bridge the gap between advanced diagnostics and everyday consumers by making these tools more accessible, understandable, and actionable.
At its core, Guts is about empowering people with knowledge. We believe that understanding what is happening in your gut is often the first step toward making more informed decisions about your health.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is feeling that I’m growing.
Living in Los Angeles has been a big part of that. I love the energy of the city, the diversity of perspectives, and the constant sense that anything is possible. Some of my favorite moments are the simplest ones: discovering a new restaurant, spending time by the ocean, or meeting other founders who are building ambitious companies from the ground up.
I’m also deeply fulfilled by the process of creating something with purpose. Building Guts has given me the opportunity to turn a personal health challenge into a startup that can genuinely help others better understand their bodies and take control of their health.
At the end of the day, what makes me happiest is feeling connected to my mission, to people who inspire me, my husband, and to a lifestyle that supports well-being.
