Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Monique.
Hi Shayla , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came into the beauty industry in 2013 on the heels of my upbringing in the dance world. Years of performing and having to wear certain makeup looks for the stage really opened the door for me to fall in love with the artistry of it. When I started out as a makeup artist, some of my earliest gigs were working with friends who were venturing into their own careers in music and film and my freelance career continued to grow and has led me from student films, multiple campaigns with RevoltTv, Vh1, MTV, and The ESPY Awards. In 2018 I realized that many of my makeup clients were unhappy with their skin and I knew that the best way to serve them was to know more about how to get them to a place where makeup felt optional. Pairing that with my own journey fighting hyperpigmentation and breakouts, I decided to go back to school to get my Esthetics License. I have spent the past 7 years combining my creativity and love for beauty with my mission to make skincare and self care something that all people find necessary and not a luxury. Especially men and women of color.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh not at all! I remember one makeup job that almost made me give up. I was hired by a director who was planning to work 3 different music video shoots over the course of the same weekend. It was a BET Awards weekend so many artists were in town. At the time I was in school, my money was low, and my daughter was younger so I had to get her situated for me to go. Long story short, none of the crew received payment for those videos. I was devastated and ready to throw my brushes out. But I didn’t. When I moved into the skincare realm, I opened my first salon suite right out of school in October 2019, and of course shortly after that we had the COVID shutdown. I was concerned that I had just wasted my time and thankfully I was able to pivot into a position with a cosmetics company until I was able to move back into a suite when the time was right. Challenges will always come up, but I’ve just learned to pivot and pray my way through them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grandeur Beauty LA?
In my treatment room, I offer facials, brow services, eyelash extensions, and waxing. My makeup services continue to be something that I offer in a mobile capacity. I specialize in brow shaping and lamination and creating custom skincare regimens that operate in tandem with the facial protocol we focus on in session. Man approach to skincare is personalized, we talk about diet, lifestyle, and realistic timelines to achieve your desired goals. I absolutely love what I do, I get the most joy from seeing my clients open their eyes and love their eyebrows or lashes, feel the health of their skin improve, relax for one quiet hour to love on themselves, and regain their confidence. I am currently accepting new clients and working on bringing more educational and self care focused workshops to the community.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was blessed to have a beautiful childhood so I have many. My Mom was and still is the best mom to ever do it. One things that comes to mind is my first ballet recital. At the very end, they invited out all of the teachers to come out and take a bow… out came little Shayla to take my bow as well, because I knew that I had been helping my classmates remember their marks on stage and some of the choreography. I’ve always been willing to teach what I know and help others around me succeed and be encouraged along the way.
