Meet Giovanna of Santa Ana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanna.

Giovanna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been writing since middle school. It ranged from little songs about friends to big ones about the trauma I was going through in my home life. I kept my songs, stories, and my voice close to my chest, so much so that I was scared to sing in front of anyone. But singing has always been my way to unravel my feelings, so it was hard to ignore.

After musical theater broke me out of my shell in high school, I finally had the opportunity to make songs in college. I’m still finding my voice and style, but have loved the different areas I could explore musically with collaborators, from jazz to pop rock to singer songwriter styles while being committed to using music as an outlet.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nope! Being an independent small artist is a constant battle between physical and mental hurdles. Numbers, opportunities, money, finding musicians who are genuinely open to making something with you (and their availability), and the ever present battle of having time on your side (especially while working a full time job to make it all happen).

I have always battled with ideas of many things regarding music. Like not being at the level I want to be at yet, music and results (or lack thereof) being tied to inner worth, comparison, feeling lost, and things failing again and again. It can be alienating, but also build the necessary armor one needs in any situation. So it’s been quite the learning experience and makes me want to keep pushing & exploring!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My weakness of never being fully consistent in the style of music I put out is also a strength that I want to set me apart. I find new parts of myself when doing jazz, pop, pop rock, and singer songwriter styles. I’m here for every mood, whether that’s rage that leads you to screaming my song “Rewiring” in the car, or needing that confidence surge back with jazzy “Movin’ On”. No matter the genre, I want my lyrics/emotion from my work to mesh with the listeners and for people to find some solace in music the way I do.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
By keeping up with me, showing some love every now and then (let your local small artist know that you like their work, seriously, it helps us!), and listening! I just dropped a fully DIY music video funded by me and worked on by some amazing film students called Rewiring! I also dropped a rock ballad song called “Gone Awry” that I like to call an “autopsy” song of a summertime romantic let down.
