Check Out Ileana Giles’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ileana Giles.

Hi Ileana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the founder of Lily Sweet Cakes, a home-based bakery that began with something very simple a genuine love for baking and the joy of sharing it with others. What started as quiet moments in my kitchen slowly turned into something much more meaningful as friends, family, and customers began to connect with what I created. Their kind words, repeat orders, and trust gave me the confidence to take this passion seriously.

Over time, I dedicated myself to improving every detail refining recipes, choosing high quality ingredients, and making sure every product carried the same care and intention. It was never just about baking, it was about creating something people could enjoy, remember, and come back to.

Alongside my regular offerings, I also take special requests for custom cakes that are designed and made personally by me. These orders are handled with extra care, allowing me to add a more personal touch and create something truly meaningful for each customer. This is where I feel most connected to my work, turning someone’s idea or moment into something they can celebrate and remember.

As Lily Sweet Cakes grew, so did my vision. I would love to become part of a café as a co-owner and supplier, bringing Lily Sweet Cakes products into a shared space where more people can experience them. I see this as more than just business it is about building something together, combining strengths, and creating a place where quality and creativity come first.

Today, Lily Sweet Cakes represents not just where I started, but where I am going. Every step of this journey has been shaped by passion, consistency, and a deep commitment to creating products that people truly enjoy and trust.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been rewarding, but it has not been without its challenges. Like many small businesses, building Lily Sweet Cakes from the ground up required patience, persistence, and adaptability. In the early stages, one of the main challenges was gaining visibility and establishing trust within the community. Without a storefront, I relied heavily on word of mouth, social media, and consistent quality to grow my customer base.

Balancing production, time management, and business operations as a home-based bakery has also required careful planning and discipline. Managing orders, maintaining consistency, and meeting customer expectations while continuing to refine recipes and expand offerings has been an ongoing learning process.

In addition, navigating the financial aspects of growing a business has been a constant challenge. The cost of sourcing high quality ingredients continues to rise, and obtaining the necessary licenses and maintaining standards requires significant investment. At times, customers may not fully see or understand the work and costs behind the scenes, which can make pricing a sensitive balance. As a result, managing finances and maintaining sustainability remains an ongoing struggle.

Despite these challenges, I have remained consistent and committed to improving. I continue to explore better ways to manage costs while still delivering quality products and fair value to customers. Each obstacle has strengthened my approach to the business, making me more resilient, more efficient, and more focused on building something meaningful and long lasting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the owner of Lily Sweet Cakes, I approach my work as both a business and a creative practice. Baking, for me, is a structured form of creativity that combines flavor, texture, and presentation into a complete product experience. Each item is developed with careful attention to detail, from recipe formulation to final presentation, ensuring consistency in both quality and design.

Alongside this, I manage multiple responsibilities, including running the business while also maintaining a regular job. This reflects a more modern way of working, where individuals often handle several roles at the same time, such as balancing employment, business operations, and personal development. For me, this requires discipline, time management, and the ability to stay organized across different commitments.

I continue to maintain Lily Sweet Cakes as a side responsibility as long as I am able to manage it effectively, while ensuring that quality and consistency are not affected. This balance allows me to stay connected to both professional growth and entrepreneurial development at the same time.

My work is driven by a focus on consistency, quality, and continuous improvement. I regularly refine recipes, explore new ideas, and ensure that each product meets a reliable standard. Both taste and presentation are treated with equal importance, whether for regular orders or special requests.

On the operational side, I handle order management, customer communication, and coordination for potential collaborations. This includes maintaining structured processes to ensure smooth delivery and professional handling of each order. Balancing creative work with operational responsibilities has helped me develop a practical and disciplined approach to business.

Overall, my work reflects a modern professional reality where multiple responsibilities are managed in parallel. It is centered on maintaining quality, staying consistent, and continuing to grow through both structured work and long-term opportunities for expansion.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I view risk taking as a necessary and strategic part of building a business. While I approach decisions carefully, I understand that growth often requires stepping outside of what is familiar and comfortable. For me, risk is not about acting impulsively, but about making informed decisions with a clear understanding of both potential challenges and opportunities.

One of the most significant risks I have taken was turning a personal passion into a business. Starting Lily Sweet Cakes required an investment of time, resources, and energy without any guarantee of success. Building a customer base from the ground up, especially without a physical storefront, required confidence in the product and patience as the business developed over time.

Another ongoing risk involves exploring new directions beyond the current business. Alongside Lily Sweet Cakes, I am developing a vision called Terra Zia, which represents a shift toward a more sustainable, earthy, and conscious brand direction. This step is not purely driven by financial goals, but by a broader vision of creating something meaningful in a different space, including sustainability and thoughtful consumption.

This transition also reflects my interest in expanding into e-commerce and building a presence in a more modern, scalable business model. It involves entering a new industry mindset and thinking beyond traditional approaches, which naturally comes with uncertainty but also long-term opportunity.

In addition to this, I also see strong value in collaboration with vendors and individuals who share similar values and vision. The idea is to work with like-minded people who are already building products aligned with this direction and create a system where we can support each other through partnerships, product sharing, or co-distribution. This allows for shared growth rather than isolated effort, especially in emerging ideas like Terra Zia and product-based sustainability concepts.

In the future, I also envision having a small, dedicated space where I can produce eco-friendly and thoughtfully designed products, combining creativity with sustainability in a practical way.

Overall, I approach risk with a balance of caution and ambition. I believe in taking calculated risks that align with long term vision, while remaining adaptable and open to learning from each experience. This mindset has allowed me to grow steadily while also preparing for larger, more meaningful expansion in the future.
