Today we’d like to introduce you to Indira Rios.
Hi Indira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Options For Youth (OFY) is a network of FREE non-profit public charter schools, serving students who have fallen behind in school, are looking to get ahead and graduate early, or simply desire a non-traditional learning environment.
OFY’s founders started the program in 1987 to provide at-promise and underserved students an alternative to traditional learning methods and environments. OFY saw the potential that struggling students couldn’t see in themselves. When California’s Charter School Law passed in 1993, Options For Youth became the first sanctioned charter school in California. For over 30 years, OFY and its founders have helped more than 135,000 students find their passion and pursue their dreams. OFY believes in fostering student dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, like any meaningful work, there have been ups and downs along the way. Some of the challenges we’ve faced include ensuring we meet the diverse needs of our students, navigating capacity and resource limitations, and continuously adapting to provide the right level of support for every learner.
What has allowed us to find success, however, is our unwavering commitment to our students. At OFY, inspiring students inspires us. We believe the student-teacher relationship is critical to a young person’s social, emotional, and academic development. When you visit one of our centers, you’ll see students working one-on-one with highly qualified, passionate teachers and advisors who are deeply invested in their success.
We take great pride in the quality of our staff and the meaningful connections they build with each student. Additionally, our blended learning model allows us to meet students where they are, offering flexibility while still providing strong academic support.
Even through challenges, our focus on relationships, adaptability, and student-centered learning continues to drive our impact and growth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Options for Youth?
OFY’s Mission
Our schools create an educational choice for all students. Our staff connects with students to empower and inspire them to achieve their goals and make their dreams a reality.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
This work is never done alone, and so much of our success is a direct reflection of the people around us.
Our leadership team has played a key role by providing guidance, vision, and the trust to carry out our work in the field. Their support allows us to stay aligned with our mission while also adapting to the needs of our communities.
Our Center Coordinators and front-line staff are the heart of our day-to-day success. They are often the first point of contact for families, and their ability to build trust, communicate clearly, and follow through makes a significant difference in whether a student feels supported enough to take the next step.
Our teachers and advisors are truly the backbone of OFY. Their dedication to building meaningful, one-on-one relationships with students is what drives retention, engagement, and ultimately student success. They go beyond instruction, they mentor, guide, and advocate for each student’s growth.
We also owe a great deal to our community partners and organizations who help us extend our reach. Whether through events, referrals, or shared resources, they play a critical role in connecting us with families who can benefit from our program.
And most importantly, our students and families deserve immense credit. Their trust, resilience, and willingness to take a different path in education inspire us every day and push us to continuously improve.
It truly takes a collective effort, and each of these groups plays an essential role in the impact we’re able to make.
