Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Wallace.
Hi Anna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I am a mezzo soprano, experimental artist, and educator based in Los Angeles, California. I have been working on my solo musical project, Annie Wonder, for the past couple of years and I am currently working on my first solo record.
“Annie Wonder” blends operatic voice with space echo, Moog, samples, and vocoder, creating psychedelic, ritual-leaning performances. Making music is a working meditation for me and a spiritual experience.
I also was the lead character in the 16mm short film OAO, directed by Rocio Mesa and based on an experimental opera I am writing about my nervous system & polyvagal theory. The film was an official selection of the 2026 Punto De Vista Film Festival.
Always interested in pursuing my love of music in a therapeutic way, I study deep listening & chi gong. I consider Bach, Pauline Oliveros, and the Beach Boys equally sacred. 🙂
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road but every day I am grateful for all the challenges I’ve been able to overcome. Being a working artist has never been an easy path, yet it is a path I would not change for the whole world.
It is especially challenging now in the difficult times the world is facing. Now is a time more than ever the world needs art, music, dance, poetry…
So lucky to have a community of supporting and inspiring musician friends here in LA, they keep me going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Music has always been my driving force. I began on upright bass in middle school, then moved onto choir and guitar, eventually earning a scholarship at 14 to study operatic voice throughout high school. I went on to study vocal performance in college, though I’ll admit I spent just as much time in practice rooms playing The Velvet Underground songs as I did working on assignments.
From an early age, I was drawn to experimental music and the sounds coming out of 1970s Germany, influences that still shape my approach today, along with the harmonies and textures of The Beach Boys. My curiosity led me to experiment with tape machines, synthesizers, and phaser pedals, opening up entirely new creative possibilities. I started playing in bands at a young age and became deeply involved in DIY spaces and local scenes.
Since moving to Los Angeles ten years ago, I’ve continued to collaborate and perform, especially within the psychedelic music community. I’ve contributed vocals to three records by Hooveriii and have frequently performed with the improvisational band, GROOP. Each of these experiences has helped shape the artist I am today.
Now I am very passionate about using a vocoder and playing my moogs. I like to build an atmosphere when I work: surrounded by plants & the California sun, immersed in color, especially my favorite, pink!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am very introverted & need a lot of time and space alone in nature to recharge and reflect.
I am also very passionate about teaching music, I have been a freelance private music teacher for a long time. I teach all ages, but I am especially passionate about working with children. They teach me…with their open hearts and free spirits, they inspire me to always think outside of the box and stay focused on the present moment. They show me how precious life is, remind me how marvelous a rainbow is.
It is truly a gift to be able to spread my passion for music in this way, to future generations. 🙂
