Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Rose.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in LA as a competitive dancer my entire life. I wasn’t the greatest technique wise, but performing on stage was what I loved about it. When Covid happened, I was forced to take a step back from dance and reflect on what I truly wanted to continue/pursue in my life. Acting was always something I’d been interested in, but never brave enough to try. I decided to join my first online acting class during quarantine, and have fallen in love with it ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I went to a college prep high school where college felt like the only path, the only goal. When it was finally time to apply, I felt completely lost. The only thing I actually wanted to do was act, and since I already live in LA, I didn’t see the point in leaving to pursue it somewhere else.
I tried community college thinking I’d figure it out, but after about a month I realized it wasn’t moving me forward. It just made me feel stuck and stressed, so I dropped out.
After that, I started taking acting classes while working 3 jobs at the same time. It was exhausting, and I questioned it a lot, but eventually I started booking work and getting real experience on set. Acting became something real, and I was able to leave those jobs and focus on it full time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been posting on social media for most of my life, which opened a lot of doors for me, including meeting my manager. He introduced me to a side of the industry called verticals, which are mini soap-style series filmed for your phone, usually shot in about 6 to 12 days. At the time, I only heard negative things about them, like stories of disrespect and mistreatment, so I was hesitant. I told him my concerns, and he suggested we start slow and just see how it felt, as they are going to become big very soon.
I decided to trust him and take a chance on my first project with an app called Candyjar, and it completely changed my perspective. I had an amazing time. Being on a real set felt nothing like anything I had experienced before, and I fell in love with it right away. From there, I started auditioning for more and bigger roles, and things began to build quickly.
Now I’m on my 13th project in 8 months. The days are long and the scripts can be crazy, but I get to do what I love full time, which isn’t something most actors get to say. I’m really grateful for that, and for my manager for pushing me to take that first step.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
As you grow up, you are surrounded by people telling you what you should be doing and the proper path of life to take. The truth is, there is no “proper path of life” and the only one who should tell you how to live your life is yourself. No matter what you do in life, there will always be someone who will judge you, and someone who will support you. It is important that you keep those who support you close in your life, as they are the ones who deserve to watch you achieve your goals. Ending relationships with people who won’t allow you to find your own path in life isn’t a step back, it’s a step towards living a life filled with support, encouragement, and love.
