Hidden Gems: Meet Nazia Malik of Smyl OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nazia Malik.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a dentist and the founder of SMYL OC Dental. My journey into dentistry started with a passion for healthcare, but I quickly realized I was drawn to the hands-on, artistic side of dentistry and the ability to build long-term and meaningful relationships with patients.

After completing my training at NYU and Boston University School of Dental Medicine, I began my career by gaining experience in different clinical settings, working with varying demographics from the Inland Empire all the way to the Bay Area. I saw an opportunity to create something more intentional. I wanted to build an office that really focuses on both quality care and the overall patient experience. I wanted to build a space that felt modern, welcoming, and elevated, while still being accessible to the community.

Starting SMYL OC Dental was a big step. Like most small business owners, it came with challenges such as learning the business side of things, building a strong team, growing a patient base from the ground up, and even learning how construction works while building out the office. It was a completely new process for me, but it gave me a much deeper understanding of how to bring a vision to life from scratch.

At the same time, it has been incredibly rewarding to see everything come together.

Today, we are focused on providing high quality, patient centered care, with an emphasis on aesthetics, prevention, and making people feel comfortable coming to the dentist. We are also passionate about mentorship and giving back to the community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, and in a lot of ways, it was one of the most challenging seasons of my life.

I was building SMYL OC Dental from the ground up while also going through a major life transition. During the construction phase, I had my first baby. So I was navigating new motherhood at the same time that I was learning how to run a business At the same time, I was learning how construction works, coordinating with contractors, making design decisions, and trying to stay on top of every detail while also preparing to open and grow a patient base and manage an office build out, which was completely new to me.

At the same time, I was learning how construction works, coordinating with contractors, making design decisions, and trying to stay on top of every detail while also preparing to open and grow a patient base.

There were also a lot of unexpected delays with construction. Timelines kept getting pushed back, and there were periods where my contractor would go completely silent for weeks, sometimes even months at a time. That uncertainty was really difficult, because you’re trying to plan, move forward, and stay on track, but you don’t always have clear answers or control over the situation.

It was overwhelming at times, but it also pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect. It taught me resilience, patience, and how to keep moving forward even when things don’t go according to plan.

Looking back, that period means a lot to me because I wasn’t just building a practice, I was building a new chapter of my life at the same time. And that makes where we are today feel even more meaningful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a patient-centered general dental practice focused on providing comprehensive care in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Our goal is to help patients achieve and maintain healthy, confident smiles through conservative, minimally invasive treatment that supports both function and aesthetics.

We offer a wide variety of services including Invisalign, professional whitening, crowns, veneers, and other restorative and cosmetic treatments tailored to each patient’s needs. Whether someone is coming in for routine care or more advanced treatment, we focus on creating personalized plans that align with their goals, lifestyle, and long-term oral health.

What sets us apart is the level of personalization we bring to every case. We don’t take a one size fits all approach. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s goals, lifestyle, and oral health needs. We also prioritize clear communication and education so patients feel informed and comfortable at every step of their care.

From a brand standpoint, we are most proud of the trust we’ve built with our patients and the way our practice combines clinical precision with a warm, approachable experience. Many patients come to us feeling hesitant or unsure about treatment, and we take pride in guiding them through a process that feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

Overall, our focus is on delivering high quality, predictable results across a full range of dental services while creating a dental experience that feels modern, honest, and patient first.

What are your plans for the future?
Our focus moving forward is continued growth while staying true to the patient-centered care that defines our practice. We’re looking to expand our ability to provide comprehensive treatment in-house so patients can complete more of their care in one familiar place, without needing multiple referrals.

We’re also planning to continue investing in modern technology and digital workflows to improve accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort. This includes enhancing treatment planning tools, improving outcomes, and streamlining the overall patient experience from consultation to completion.

We strongly value continuing education as a practice and are committed to staying current with the latest advancements in dentistry. This allows us to bring modern techniques, materials, and technologies directly to our patients to ensure they receive the highest standard of care.

A key long-term goal is to expand into additional locations in order to increase accessibility to more communities.

Overall, we want to continue building a practice that is known not only for strong clinical dentistry, but also for a calm, supportive environment where patients feel confident, cared for, and well-guided throughout their treatment.
