Inspiring Conversations with Rhona Vega of Parent Matterz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhona Vega.

Rhona, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Parent Matterz was created after my five children got close to $1 million in scholarships to college. I wanted every family (especially those historically excluded) to have access to those same opportunities and resources that started for my children as early as middle school.

God wouldn’t let me rest until I told everyone. I’m sure I drove alot of people crazy talking and asking questions and I became a resource magnet. I initially had one goal. To make sure my children had livable wage careers and jobs and could pay their own bills one day. I have been a mother now 42 years, since I was 19 and I wanted an opportunity to go back and live my 19 year old dreams. One was to travel the world.
Its worked, i’ve visited 14 countries in the past 7 years. It was originally a passion project but now it has become a full fledge business helping mid to large companies protect their workplace productivity by offering their parent employees college and career readiness guidance and support. This type of support for Employee Business Groups (ERG) and HR leaders helps employee retention which impacts a
Companies ROI. We also help individual families through early start consulting. Lastly we host college and career readiness bootcamps for 7-12th grade students each summer. We have a 100% rate of attending college.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smooth at all. The learning curve of becoming an entrepreneur is HUGE. I still consider myself to be in the infancy stage. I remain super coachable and am
grateful to be a scholar in the Goldman Sachs Black in Business program currently. This program is designed to help founders become CEO’s, scale and increase our revenue and profits. Our graduation is in July. Im grateful for everyone at Jump Start and Dr. Victor Mullings and all the professors teaching us at NYU Stern School Of Business. Im also apart of the New Jersey Black Womans Collective that is
Also connecting me to a great network that is also super valuable. I have had lots of costly and painful lessons but am grateful to have a supportive village and that we are impacting families for gentrification to come despite the hiccups.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I shared all this earlier but I will add don’t ever give up.

Seeking support until you
Find your people to
Help you create what you have dreamt of

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
